help re:clean startup & keep new PC humming

I have a new PC seems to have accumulated junk already with a zillion things running in the background etc.

I'd like to keep this new PC clean, fast, an uninfected.

Can anyone?
  • tell me what junk id OK to disable for startup
  • help me with what utilituies are best for scanning the PC
  • offer suggestinons on free firewall/anti virus etc, as was talking to one of y'all a while ago who said I should forget about my Norton IS program.

Do a "SCAN and Save a Log file"
A log will open in Notepad
Copy and paste the WHOLE contents of the log  here... Don't try and fix anything yet----It is all important

We'll just take a quick look at the log, if it looks good, I'll post the programs I would use

Let's start with the no. 1 thing to remove
You have 2 AV's running
Symantec's and AVG
Running 2 av's in the background can cause conflicts and do more harm than good
Also, can cause a decrease in system performance

Let's remove Symantec's, as you mentioned before it is expired
Uninstall thru add/remove
If you have problems with removing it all

Use the following link:

Make sure you reboot after you uninstall all parts of it
Ensure, for now, that the firewall built into Windows is enable thru your Windows Control Panel

Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log

Together with AVG, we will get you a descent Firewall and other protections
AVG as a free virus scanner is not that bad
They just acquired Ewido, a reputable malware scanner
Striving to increase their product!

Next steps: Figure out what you need on startup

Many use msconfig to disable an entry on startup
I recommend that you use CodeStuff's starter
A free utility
Unzip to a folder of it's own, uncheck an entry from running on startup

Look with a program too disable it first on startup, then use STARTER to disable it
Reboot the computer afterwards

Also,

On castle cops is says "X nwiz.exe /installquiet Added by W32/Chode-J WORM!"

fine to disable it... but if it was added by a worm, does that mean I am infected? how do I get rid of it???

Can you do the following please
If you have already used STARTER
Enable everything on startup
If your using msconfig, open it and enable all startup entries
Under the General tab>>>Do a Normal starup

Reboot the computer and come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log
This allows me to see everything running

Disable again, what you feel comfortable with with STARTER
Reboot the computer afterwards

Back in Windows
Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

After you have ticked the above entry, close All other open windows
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot the computer again

Back in Windows
Open Spybot 1.4
SEARCH FOR UPDATES on the right
Check, and then download all updates
After update is complete
Click the "Immunize" button on the left>>>OK at the prompt>>Immunzine at the top green cross
Please Immunize after every update
Check for problems if there was an update please
Run a scan on a regular basis

For added protections:
*Install  SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 by JavaCool  
    *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
    *Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
    *Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"

Clean those temp files, etc...
==Download and install Windows CleanUp! 4.5.1

==Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

    * Empty Recycle Bins
    * Delete Cookies
    * Delete Prefetch files
    * Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
When it's done>>Click Close
Reboot one last time
Bootup may be a bit slower, not to worry
The bootup speed will increase on next startup

Come back here and let me know how everythings running please
NOTE: If you haven't run a Disk Defragment on the computer in some time, now would be a good time
I find it best to run it in safe mode

Hold onto CleanUp!
It's a great tool to help find those files you may miss

Yes I am definitely interested in a better firewall!

The full version will become a limited free version after 30 days
Many recommending it however, I haven't used it myself yet
But give it a try
