Another OHPE ver 4.12_23 Problem

Hello,

I am sure many of you have seen this, but I am getting this problem myself. I tried to do it myself looking over the ofurm....  but it appears I am powerless!

Please help..

Can you do the following please
You have both McAfee's and AVG installed
This is not practical as both together will cause conflicts and decrease system performance

I suggest you access your add/remove programs and remove one or the other
Reboot the computer afterwards
Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log please

Could you also let me know the exact make and model of your computer please

Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

==Download and install Windows CleanUp! 4.5.1
Don't run this yet
NOTE: If you have an older version of Windows CleanUp!, Please uninstall it and use this newer version

From the main ewido screen, click on Update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close out Ewido for now, we'll need it later
If for some reason the Updater won't work can take a look at the following link to help with
the updating

Save the rest of these instructions to a Notepad file saved to your desktop or Print them out for use in safe mode

RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads
Choose Safe mode from the startup menu


==Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

    * Empty Recycle Bins
    * Delete Cookies
    * Delete Prefetch files
    * Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
When it's done>>Click Close
DECLINE to Log off or Restart the computer

==Open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process.  A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process
I'll need to see these later, by default they are also saved at C:\rapport.txt

If a reboot was required, reboot back to safe mode
If it wasn't required, remain in safe mode

==Open Ewido Anti-Malware
Click on the Scanner button on the left menu
Select Complete System Scan
*If Ewido finds something it will prompt you with "Infected Object found"
Ensure the following are Selected
  *1. Perform Action = Remove
  *2. Create Encrypted Backup in Quarantine (Recommended)
  *3. Perform action with all infections
    Then click OK
When Ewido has finished it's scan click the "Save Report" button
Save the report to desktop
Exit Ewido
NOTE: When Ewido is running, don't open any other Windows

Reboot back to Normal mode
Post back the following
1. Post a fresh hijackthis log
2. Post the whole report from Ewido's
3. Post the whole log from Smitfraudfix>>C:\rapport.txt

but also removed the firewall and anti-spam software

Was this an out of date version of McAfee?
If you don't have the firewall installed anymore, can you make sure the Firewall in Windows control panel is enabled, the one built into XP
Would you like to replace the McAfee Firewall with a free replacement?

And yes, I would hold onto Ewido
It is a different type of scanner as opposed to the realtime protection found in AVG
The full version of Ewido will become a limited free version in a couple weeks after install
But still a great scanner to update and run on a monthly basis

But as mentioned, I have other firewall software for you to try for free if you would like to go that route

sure, I would love firewall... after being burned like this, i wouldn't want to take a chance.

Mcafee version was one year out of date. Which firewall would you recommend?

Also, for Windowclean... would you recommend following same direction you've recommend to sweep my computer once in a while? Below is the part that I am talking about....

I would just do the following for cleanup
Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

Optionally, you can fix the next one too

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot your computer

Back in Windows
For added protections:
*Install  SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 by JavaCool  

*Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer

After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"
                   
Firewall: I haven't used this one yet, but I will be soon
It comes recommended by others
Sunbelts' Kerio personal firewall
The full version will become a free limited version after 30 days
NOTE: after installation of the firewall
Disable the firewall built into XP thru the Windows control panel
Again, you don't also need 2 firewalls running, this can also cause conflicts

I would hold onto CleanUp
Open CleanUp! and read the Help file>>>Options
I always do a standard cleanup, the custom setup if my speech for cleaning a log
I'll leave that to you
I run it at least every couple of weeks, again, I'll leave that up to you

Do the following above and then let me know how everything's going

Could you also let me know if you have these 2 free tools installed
Ad-Aware Se personal 1.06 and Spybot 1.4
They are both great scanners to update and run every couple of weeks
I would opt to install them if you don't have them

Hello!

I've removed all the ones you suggested. Thanks... it was a real life saver.

I have not yet downloaded the firewall.. er.. i currently use the following now...

Spyware:
Adaware, Spybot, Yahool tool bar

Virus:
AVG

Malware:
Ewido

Window Cleanup

I turn off Ewido while AVG is running.... So AVG is the only thing running while I am using the computer. I plan to go through all of them every week or so.

Do you think I should keep Ewido open while running AVG? Ewido had the autoguard ... so I turned that off.. scared that it might disrupt my AVG or anything like that...

What about firewall? Do you think I would need a separate firewall if I let's say... have both AVG and EWIDO on? How good would the firewall be when it turns back to free version?

If I were to keep Ewido, that means I would be returning back to free version soon... but I found out I can get manual updates from their websites... http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/ (little sneaky way)

Double check to make sure the XP firewall is enabled

Ewido is not the same as an Anti-virus, so they won't conflict under normal circumstances
