!!please help removing worm_sdbot.dam!!!
« on: May 06, 2006, 09:18:34 PM »
PLEASE HELP!!!

It all happened after installing limewire.
After starting up computer a pop up window says: "b.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close."
Trend Micro identifies virus Worm_SDbot.dam and shows the infected file: C:\WINDOWS\B.EXE
It cannot quarantine the file and suggests to delete it manually.
When I go to windows explorer, b.exe briefly shows and then disappears from the list. Another Trend Micro pop up says that the infected file b.exe is quarantined.
Then I go to quarantined items and delete it which appears to be successful..
BUT: whenever I start up the computer again, the whole thing repeats (tried it several times!).

Many thanks in advance!

Also, i cannot access registry directory (it keeps saying that it's being used by another program) and i cannot open the task manager

From my signature below, download and save too a permanent folder of it's own onto your harddrive
Hijackthis 1.99.1
Open Hijackthis.exe

Do a "SCAN and Save a Log file"
A log will open in Notepad
Copy and paste the WHOLE contents of the log  here... Don't try and fix anything yet----It is all important

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Can you do the following please
I would like to see one other log

Download and save WinPFind.zip
UNZIP the contents to your desktop
Don't run it yet

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O4 - Global Startup: svchost.exe

After you have ticked the above entry, close All other open windows
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

RESTART your Computer into SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads
Choose Safe mode from the startup menu and hit Enter

In safe mode

Open the WinPFind folder you extracted to desktop

Click START SCAN
Let this finish, a log will open so you will know it's done
Close out after

Reboot back to Normal mode

Back in Windows
Post the results of the WindPFind.txt located in the WinPFind folder

Did everything according to instructions.
The initial pop-up for "b.exe" disappeared and it looks like it's gone from windows folder.

Here are the results of WinPfind log:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Can I have you scan a file please

Go to either of these links
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
or
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

Use the browse button and navigate to this file on your hard disk
C:\WINDOWS\system32\2BE10EE6FB.sys<--this file

Right click on the file and choose Select
Then use the Submit button
Let it finish scanning
Could you post back the results of the scan back here please

I would still like to run a couple tools on your computer, but can I see those results first please

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Can you do the following please
==Download and install Windows CleanUp! 4.5.1
Don't run this yet
NOTE: If you have an older version of Windows CleanUp!, Please uninstall it and use this newer version

==Download and then Install
Ewido anti-malware 3.5

When installing, under "Additional Options" UNCHECK

    "Install background guard"
     "Install scan via context menu".
From the main ewido screen, click on Update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close out Ewido for now, we'll need it later
If for some reason the Updater won't work can you manually download the
Updates from this link after you have Ewido installed
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

Now that you have those 2 above tools
I would like to see a fresh Hijackthis log, but first, you are controlling entries on startup with msconfig
This is not necessarily a bad thing, but in your case, you were hiding malicious activity from me with it
For now can you do the following please
You can disable legit entries later, AFTER we have you entirely clean
Go to START>>RUN>>type in msconfig
Hit OK
Under STARTUP tab>>Enable all
Under General tab, ensure Normal startup is selected
Apply it and Close but DO NOT reboot the computer yet

Instead, come back here and run a fresh scan and save logfile with hijackthis and post a fresh log please

Did what you said - dowloaded both tools.
Although i'm having a problem with updating Ewido. I tried to do it from their website but it gives "error" - the page is currently unavailable.

here is the new hijackthis logfile (after enabling all startup):

Sounds as if you have the latest updates

Can you do the following please
Please save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop for reference
or Print them out!

RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads
Choose Safe mode from the startup menu
In safe mode

==Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

    * Empty Recycle Bins
    * Delete Cookies
    * Delete Prefetch files
    * Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
When it's done>>Click Close
DECLINE to Log off or Restart the computer

Find the next files and delete them if found
Manually navigate to them please by Opening MyComputer>>Double clicking on Local disk C> and so on until you have found the correct file
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\svchost.exe <-this file
C:\WINDOWS\pss\svchost.exe <-this file

DO NOT delete svchost.exe from the System32 folder, as it is a legit file
Just the 2 as mentioned above if found

Stay in safe mode
==Open Ewido Anti-malware
Click on the Scanner button on the left menu
Select Complete System Scan
*If Ewido finds something it will prompt you with "Infected Object found"
Ensure the following are Selected
  *1. Perform Action = Remove
*2. Create Encrypted Backup in Quarantine (Recommended)
*3. Perform action with all infections
  Then click OK
When Ewido has finished it's scan click the "Save Report" button
Save the report to the desktop or someplace you will remember
Exit Ewido
NOTE: When Ewido is running, don't open any other windows, let it run uninterrupted

Afterwards, reboot back to normal mode
Leave everything enabled on startup

Post back a fresh hijackthis log and the Whole report from Ewido's

EDIT>>I'm not totally sure if Ewido is still up to date
After you do the above, can you do the following please
Open Ewido, under the main page
Under Status of Program
Can you give me Version of database please

Good morning, I just popped back in
Yup, you were updated to the latest database, that's good
Actually, if you want to make sure that the updater is working properly
There was a new update today
After you update you should be at Version #1847

I just figured out that the fixupdate tool posted at Ewido's doesn't work on my machine
But members at the Ewido forum have a signaturecleaner that works
You don't need it, it was just FYI

NOTE: Ewido cleaned a file related to either of the following
ESPN Motion and/or  Disney Motion
You don't need this installed to watch videos at their site
You could choose to uninstall either from add/remove programs
If you choose to keep it, we should replace the file that Ewido removed related to digstream
But it definitely does not need to run on startup
Let me know please after you do the following:

Final Cleanup
If everything is running better
We should flush all your restore points to ensure you don't restore any nasties that may be sitting idle
Go to START>>RUN>>In the open field
    Type in
msconfig
Click OK
Click the "Launch System Restore" button
On the Left hand side click on "System Restore Settings"
Put a Check in "Turn off System Restore"
Apply it and OK out of there>>Reboot your computer
Back in Windows, Go back and take the check out of "Turn off system restore"
This will reenable the System Restore feature and creates a new restore point
Protect yourself against Future Attacks
*Install  SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 by JavaCool
    *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"

*Make sure your Anti-Virus software is always kept up to date and actively running in the background

*Keep up to date on Windows updates (High Priorities)
This is the most important step in keeping your system secure
+If you have Microsoft Office products installed
Check for updates also, there is a link at Windows Updates labelled "Office Family"

*Make sure your Firewall is enabled and running
A Firewall is also very important
This provides a line of defense against someone who might try to access your computer without your permission

Update and do scan's with your Anti-Spyware programs on a regular basis
Once every week or two
In addition: Open Spybot 1.4
Click on the Immunize button>>OK>>Immunize at the top green cross
Please Immunize after every update

+I would opt to hold onto CleanUp! and Ewido,
After a couple weeks after installation, Ewido will default to the limited free version
A great scanner to update and run on a monthly basis

You can go now go back and Disable your entries with "msconfig"
That are not required on startup
