Some websites no longer accessible -- suspect spyware
« Reply #1 on: May 17, 2006, 08:31:03 AM »
You are running both Symantec's and Avira's AntiVir virus realtime protections in the background
This is not a good idea, have more than one AV actively running can cause conflicts with the operating system
I suggest you disable one entirely from running on startup or uninstall it

Reboot the computer afterwards
Post back a fresh hijackthis log afterwards

How long have you had IE7 installed?

Could I also see an uninstall list from Hijackthis please
Reopen Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools section>>Open Uninstall manager
Click the SAVE LIST button
Save this list to your desktop then copy and paste back here the whole contents please

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

Some websites no longer accessible -- suspect spyware
« Reply #2 on: May 19, 2006, 07:18:01 AM »
I installed IE7 after the problem started occuring. Same with Antivir which I did at the suggestion of my service provider. This problem started after suspecting a spyware problem and attempting removal. However, the same sites I cannot get to through my ISP are accessible when I dial-up using Email Removed Anyway, the new  Hijackthis log you requested is posted followed by the Uninstall list:

Some websites no longer accessible -- suspect spyware
« Reply #3 on: May 19, 2006, 08:02:01 AM »
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Could you also check a file for me, a new entry appeared in your log
It may be legit
Can you navigate to this file please
C:\WINDOWS\system32\WPDShServiceObj.dll

Right click on WPDShServiceObj.dll and left click properties
What is the creation date?
Do you remember any software you installed at that same time?
If there is a version tab, can you open it and give me an idea what it's related too please
Also,
Go to either of these links
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
or
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

Use the browse button and navigate to this file on your hard disk
C:\WINDOWS\system32\WPDShServiceObj.dll <-this file

Right click on the file and choose Select
Then use the Submit button
Let it finish scanning
Could you post back the results of the scan back here please

Some websites no longer accessible -- suspect spyware
« Reply #5 on: May 19, 2006, 10:00:41 PM »
Thanks for the info on that file
Can you do the following please

==Download and then Install
Ewido anti-malware 3.5

When installing, under "Additional Options" UNCHECK

    "Install background guard"
     "Install scan via context menu".
From the main ewido screen, click on Update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close out Ewido for now, we'll need it later
If for some reason the auto updater won't work
Please manually update from this link
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

Please save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop for reference
or Print them out!

RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads
Choose Safe mode from the startup menu
In safe mode

I'm not familiar with the program you have installed, but open it and clean Cookies, temp files, etc..
with your version of iISystem Wiper 2.4.1
Remain in safe mode

=Open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process.  A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process
I'll need to see these later, by default they are also saved at C:\rapport.txt

If a reboot was required, reboot back to safe mode
If it wasn't required, remain in safe mode

==Open Ewido Anti-malware
Click on the Scanner button on the left menu
Select Complete System Scan
*If Ewido finds something it will prompt you with "Infected Object found"
Ensure the following are Selected
  *1. Perform Action = Remove
*2. Create Encrypted Backup in Quarantine (Recommended)
*3. Perform action with all infections
  Then click OK
When Ewido has finished it's scan click the "Save Report" button
Save the report to the desktop or someplace you will remember
Exit Ewido
NOTE: When Ewido is running, don't open any other windows, let it run uninterrupted

Reboot back to Normal mode
1. Run a Scan and save logfile with Hijackthis and post a fresh log
2. Post the whole report from Ewidos'

Forum Help Request – Note 7
May 20 2006, xx:xx AM
Jay’s note back to Guestolo

When I first tried to run Ewido it would not start. I had a message saying “could not run because LANG.DLL is not found”. I uninstalled and reinstalled then returned to Safe mode to continue as initially requested. I hope this did not effect results sought.

Some websites no longer accessible -- suspect spyware
« Reply #7 on: May 20, 2006, 11:44:18 AM »
How's everything running now?
As mentioned earlier, I wouldn't have Avira AntiVir running in the background
Since you have Norton's protections running

I suggest that you open AntiVir and disable the Guard from running on startup

FYI>I wouldn't have RealPlayers updater running either, this is optional
But you can
(1) Start RealOne Player (2) Tools - Preferences (3) Automatic services in the Categories pane (4) Uncheck all options and then OK
====================================================

Your Java is out of date, it's important to keep it updated for security reasons
The latest version is
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Open the Windows Control panel and double click to open the Java Icon
Under the Cache tab>>Clear Cache

I don't find the Java updater that reliable, but you could try using the updater within the java icon to update
If you have problems updating, let me know, we'll try alternatives to get you updated

Can I have you run one more tool please
Download and save WinPFind.zip
UNZIP the contents to your desktop
Don't run it yet

RESTART your Computer into SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads
Choose Safe mode from the startup menu and hit Enter

In safe mode
Open the WinPFind folder you extracted to desktop
Double click on WinPFind.exe

Click START SCAN
Let this finish, a log will open so you will know it's done
Close out after

Reboot back to Normal mode
If you were successful in updating Java earlier
Access your add/remove programs and remove the older version of Java
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Post the results of the WindPFind.txt located in the WinPFind folder

Could I also see one last hijackthis log

Some websites no longer accessible -- suspect spyware
« Reply #8 on: May 20, 2006, 01:55:28 PM »
I’m still having the initial problem of not being able to access certain websites – examples include www.mathsoft.com, www.stercomm.com, www.avantgo.com, www.dilbert.com (yes, I admit it) and many others.  Examples I can get to: www.microsoft.com, www.cnn.com, www.yahoo.com and many more.  Could it be in the way websites are built? I don’t have a clue. But you have helped me uncover some malware I didn’t know was lurking.

Also, I believed I’d already disabled AntiVir. At least now it shows it is not even installed.

The WinPFind log follows:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Some websites no longer accessible -- suspect spyware
« Reply #9 on: May 20, 2006, 02:55:53 PM »
Can we try and narrow this down please
It may just be an IE7 problem, but let's make sure

Can you go to START>>RUN>>type in
msconfig
Under the SERVICES and Startup tabs>>Enable All
Under the General tab, ensure Normal startup is selected

Apply and Close
DON'T reboot the computer yet

access Internet Options via Control Panel
Under the Programs tab "Reset Web Settings"
Go to Internet Options> General> Browsing History> Delete> the next screen
has the option to clear history, autocomplete, cache, etc.

I assume you have the free version of AntiVir installed
Can you access your Add/Remove programs and remove it please, this will help eliminate the possibility of it causing problems
Reboot the computer afterwards

Back in Windows

Go to START>>RUN>>type in cmd

Then type the following and hit Enter
ipconfig /flushdns

Type Exit>>Enter

I want to check one more file, it may be legit
Can you go to either Jotti's or VirusTotal and scan this file please
Post back the results
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\umdf\MsftWdf_user_01_00_00.Wdf

Can you now access the sites?
If not, can you try the following
This is my favorite browser
Can you download and install Firefox please
This should eliminate if it's the computer side or Ie7 side
http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/

NOTE: I Linked you too the English version of Firefox, but there is a link to other languages on that page
Other Systems & Languages

Try the sites with Firefox

Post a fresh hijackthis log and let me know if you can access those sites please

Reminder: I had this same problem before installing IE7. I did that at a suggestion from my ISP provider’s tech support. Same with AntiVir (which I did get rid of).

1) I ran the scan of
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\umdf\MsftWdf_user_01_00_00.Wdf
on Jotti and got the following message:

The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file.

I ran the scan of the same file on VirusTotal and got the following results (nothing found):

STATUS: FINISHED
Complete scanning result of "MsftWdf_user_01_00_00.Wdf", received in VirusTotal at 05.21.2006, 09:23:51 (CET).

2) Following these steps I still cannot access the sites previously listed. Also, I could not download Mozilla from your link (I eventually did accomplish through an alternate site). In fact, this is an example of my problem. My ISP’s tech support had also suggested trying Mozilla before I reached you. I can get to the site through the link you provided but when I click to “Download Firefox” button I get the message:

Your download will begin shortly...
If your download does not start after a few seconds, use this link.

…this is normal so far but the link never opens. I click on the “link” but get the same result:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage
Most likely causes:
•   You are not connected to the Internet.
•   The website is encountering problems.
•   There might be a typing error in the address.
What you can try:
Check your Internet connection. Try visiting another website to make sure you are connected.

  Retype the address.

Go back to the previous page.

  More information
   For offline users

I then tried to download at Download.com but could not reach that link either. So I finally tried an alternate site: ftp-mozilla.netscape.com. This did the trick and I successfully downloaded.

I still cannot access the sites I’ve been trying – www.dilbert.com, www.dice.com, www.alcatel.com, etc.
The message back is:

Unable to connect
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.avantgo.com.
    *   The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
    *   If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
    *   If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Can we check your host file please,
Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools section>>Open Hosts File Manager
Click the OPEN IN NOTEPAD button
A text will open, can you copy and paste the whole contents back here please

In addition, just for a double check
I just want to make sure you only have the required files in the hosts location

Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box to notepad, not including the word "code"
Paste it to the empty Notepad file
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as hosts.bat

Save this file on the desktop

Code: [Select]
@echo off
cd C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
dir /s /a > C:\hosts.txt
notepad C:\hosts.txt
del /q C:\hosts.txt

Double click on hosts.bat, a text file will open, can you copy and paste the contents back here too please

1) Here are the contents of the “Open Hosts File Manager” request:

# Copyright © 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# symbole '#'.
#
# Par exemple :
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # serveur source
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # hôte client x

127.0.0.1   localhost

2) Here are the contents of the “hosts.bat” text file:

Le volume dans le lecteur C n'a pas de nom.
Le num‚ro de s‚rie du volume est B8B8-AE7A

 R‚pertoire de C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC

26/10/2004  09:18    <REP>          .

30/08/2002  08:00               790 hosts.msn
30/08/2002  08:00             4ÿ251 LMHOSTS.SAM
30/08/2002  08:00               457 NETWORKS

     Total des fichiers list‚sÿ:
               6 fichier(s)           14ÿ637 octets
               2 R‚p(s)  108ÿ067ÿ909ÿ632 octets libres

This text has some characters that are likely not correct and probably due to the fact it’s in French. For example, it looks like the accented “e” is showing up as a comma in the words for “numero”, “serie”, “repertoire”.  I have no idea what the “y” with the two dots over it is supposed to represent. I hope it means something for you.

Thanks for this and everything you've done so far.

Can you do the following please

==Download and install Windows CleanUp! 4.5.1

==Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

    * Empty Recycle Bins
    * Delete Cookies
    * Delete Prefetch files
    * Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
The first time you run cleanup, it may prompt to run as demo anyways
Please disallow this and run the actual cleaning
When it's done>>Click Close
DECLINE to Log off or Restart the computer

Find and delete this file please
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\hosts.msn <-this file

Reboot your computer

Let me know how everythings running please

« Reply #14 on: May 22, 2006, 01:46:26 AM »
I ran CleanUp! on all users and deleted hosts.msn  as you suggested. Upon reboot I still have the same problem. Here’s the window I get back – same as always with certain sites:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Most likely causes:
•   You are not connected to the Internet.
•   The website is encountering problems.
•   There might be a typing error in the address.

What you can try:

Check your Internet connection. Try visiting another website to make sure you are connected.

Retype the address.

Go back to the previous page.

More information
This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:
•   Internet connectivity has been lost.
•   The website is temporarily unavailable.
•   The Domain Name Server is not reachable.
•   The Domain Name Server does not have a listing for the website's domain.
•   If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click tools, click Internet Options, click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled under the security section.

   For offline users

Some websites no longer accessible -- suspect spyware

I ran CleanUp! on all users and deleted hosts.msn as you suggested.

Do any other users have problems reaching the sites?
Or is it just your user profile?

Is it possible to see a hijackthis from another users account to ensure we're not missing something

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Some websites no longer accessible -- suspect spyware
« Reply #16 on: May 22, 2006, 06:29:39 AM »
The same problem exists on each user's account on the same computer. The same problem also exists from my laptop, which has a different version of Norton Internet Security and running IE6. The only commonality I'm aware of is the service provider -- NOOS here in France.

The HijackThis log from another user session on the same computer follows:

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

Just some cleanup on this users account
Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {00A6FAF6-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\SrchAstt\1.bin\MWSSRCAS.DLL (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Fichiers communs\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MyWebSearch Email Plugin] C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\mwsoemon.exe
O4 - Startup: MyWebSearch Email Plugin.lnk = C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\1.bin\MWSOEMON.EXE
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsearch.com/menusearch.html?p=ZBzeb032YYFR

After you have ticked the above entry, close All other open windows
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot the computer

Back in your profile
Delete this folder if found
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch

How are you connected to the internet>>Cable or DSL?
Can you go to this site please and copy and paste back the results
http://www.speedguide.net/analyzer.php?

Can I have you do this again also, I want to take a look if anything is left behind
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Do you also remember any software you may of updated or installed just before the loss of access to any of those sites?

I did the System scan on the other user account and fixed the checked entries.

I did not find "MyWebSearch".

I am connected to the Internet via Cable (NOOS is the provider in France).

Here are the results of the SpeedGuide Analyzer:

SpeedGuide.net TCP/IP Analyzer
TCP properties for IP = 85.168.68.xxx ()
Browser/OS = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1)
Notes: Read the Analyzer FAQ if the above is not your IP address.
TCP options string = 020405b401010402
MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.
Default TCP Receive Window (RWIN) = 65535
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled TCP Receive Window = 65535

Note: TCP 1323 Options need to be enabled for RWIN over 2^16 (65535). Windows 9x might also need the MS Vtcp386 fix.
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
 64240 (MSS x 44)
bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):

Your TCP Window limits you to: 2621.4 kbps (327.675 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your TCP Window limits you to: 1048.56 kbps (131.07 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 118 hops
TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000 (0)

29500569 connections tested since 03.10.2001.
Analyzer version: 1.08 - last updated 02.28.2006.

Here are the results from SmitFraudFix:

I tried to go back over the past 2-3 weeks and I don’t remember anything other than Windows Media Player being updated, but I did a search on updates in the days prior to the first occurrence. I found that:

*  “RegWatch.sbs” and “Services.sbs” in the “c:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Includes” folder was changed. In fact, other Spybot files changed in that timeframe as well.

*  Other than that the only updates I found were from Symantec and related to LiveUpdate.

A file that was associated with registry keys from Smitfraudfix is normally a legit file
Can you do the following, just checking on something
Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box to notepad, not including the word "code"
Paste it to the empty Notepad file
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as find.bat

Save this file on the desktop

Code: [Select]
dir %Systemdrive%\apphelp.dll /a h /s > files.txt
start notepad files.txt

Double click on find.bat
a dos box will open and appear that nothing is happening, give it a minute or so as it searches,
a text file will open, can you copy and paste the contents back here please
