Permanent White Desktop after virus/worm removal?

Hi,

I recently removed a worm (?) from my computer using spyware doctor.  It essentially took over my wallpaper and put up an ad saying how someone has hacked into my computer and to protect myself I should follow the link on my desktop.  I ran spyware doctor and it cleaned it up (I think) but it left me a blank/white desktop that can't be changed.  Right clicking it and look in the properties gives me file://C:\WINDOWS\warnhp.html.  I've browsed through some of thread w/ similar problems but it seems like the advice given to each person was rather specific to each one.  I've pasted my own hijack log (hopefully done right).  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

I know this may sound strange, but SpywareDoctor is not helping me see all the bad guys
Not only that, may result in us not removing the bad guys if you let it interfere
Can you do the following please

Disable ALL of SpywareDoctors Realtime protection, and leave this disabled until you are totally clean please

REBOOT the computer after it's protections are disabled

Come  back here and post a fresh hijackthis log
Don't purposely disable anything from running on startup, let me see everything to be able to help you!

In addition to the hijackthis log, could you also
Download [color=\"red\"]SmitfraudFix[/color][/url] (by S!Ri)
Extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

I also did the second step of downloading and running SmitFraud.  However, when I tried running the .cmd file Norton AntiVirus popped up saying:

File:  C:/documents and.../Getpaths.vbs

I blocked this script, then checked online to see what Getpaths.vbs was.  One site said I had to allow this file to run in order to get SmitFraud to work?  Is that right?  In any case, after blocking the script I still ran the .cmd file and this was the result:

Don't run this yet
NOTE: If you have an older version of Windows CleanUp!, Please uninstall it and use this newer version

Ewido was either previously uninstalled or not remove properly
Remove Ewido, if you do have it installed
Reboot the computer

==Download and then Install
Ewido anti-malware 3.5

When installing, under "Additional Options" UNCHECK
 
    "Install background guard"
     "Install scan via context menu".
From the main ewido screen, click on Update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close out Ewido for now, we'll need it later
If for some reason the auto updater won't work
Please manually update from this link
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

Please save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop for reference
or Print them out!


RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads
Choose Safe mode from the startup menu
In safe mode

==Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Don't run the Demo mode
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

    * Empty Recycle Bins
    * Delete Cookies
    * Delete Prefetch files
    * Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
The first time you run CleanUp!, it may prompt to run in demo mode anyways
Don't allow it, let it actually clean please
When it's done>>Click Close
DECLINE to Log off or Restart the computer

=Open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process.  A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process
I'll need to see these later, by default they are also saved at C:\rapport.txt

If a reboot was required, reboot back to safe mode
If it wasn't required, remain in safe mode

==Open Ewido Anti-malware
Click on the Scanner button on the left menu
Select Complete System Scan
*If Ewido finds something it will prompt you with "Infected Object found"
Ensure the following are Selected
  *1. Perform Action = Remove
  *2. Create Encrypted Backup in Quarantine (Recommended)
  *3. Perform action with all infections
  Then click OK
When Ewido has finished it's scan click the "Save Report" button
Save the report to the desktop or someplace you will remember
Exit Ewido
NOTE: When Ewido is running, don't open any other windows, let it run uninterrupted

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:
Not all may be found, but fix what you see

O2 - BHO: Nothing - {8d83b16e-0de1-452b-ac52-96ec0b34aa4b} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp1C9F.tmp
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {736b5468-bdad-41be-92d0-22ae2ddf7bcb} - (no file)


After you have ticked the above entry, close All other open windows
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot back to Normal mode
Post back all the following please
1. Run a Scan and Save logfile with Hijackthis and post the fresh log
2. Post the whole report from Ewido's
3. Can you also post the log from Smitfraudfix, located here>>C:\Rapport.txt

Could you also let me know if you have the latest versions of Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06 and Spybot 1.4

Hi,

I forgot to save the log of the Ewido report, is there a location where it automatically saves?  The one I posted is the one where I rebooted into safe mode and re-ran ewido.  I think the original one showed 8 infections.  Also, I was prompted to remove :  App data\Sun\Java\deployment\cache\javapi\v1.o\jar\ar3.jar-2224b314-16c8271c.zip/gummy.class..so I did and it removed the entire .zip.  Is that okay?  Thank you for the help.

That's fine

I would however, do the following
Open the Windows Control panel and double click to open the Java Icon
Under the Cache tab>>Clear Cache

We should get you up to date with Java
I don't find the Java updater that reliable, but you could try using the updater within the java icon to update
If it won't work, what I typically do
Go to the following link and download and install the Windows Offline installation of
Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 6
http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_xpi.jsp

Afterwards, reboot and then go into your add/remove programs
The latest version of Java is
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

You don't want to remove that one, but remove any older versions or updates installed

You can go back now and enable SpywareDoctors protections if still disabled

Come back here and let me know how everythings running

As I asked before, do you only rely on SpywareDoctor for spyware scanning?
Or do you use Spybot 1.4 and/or Ad-aware SE Personal 1.06 also?
