PC Randomly Locks Up
« on: June 02, 2006, 09:48:17 AM »
Hello All

Recently I had to get a new harddrive cos my old one blew up. All has been fine up until now. My PC keeps randomly freezing. And I mean Randomly. Some times it will do it after 2 Hours sometimes after 2 Minutes. It just totally locks up. No Mouse or Keyboard Input. Programs stop, Music stop everything FREEZES. And then i have to restart. I have scanned for Spyware even checked for overheating and neither of these seems to be the problem. What could be causing this annoying behaviour?

It may be a hardware issue, but just to be certain,
From my signature below, download and save too a permanent folder of it's own onto your harddrive
Hijackthis 1.99.1
Open Hijackthis.exe

Do a "SCAN and Save a Log file"
A log will open in Notepad
Copy and paste the WHOLE contents of the log  here.

Do you know what this entry is related too?
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [JAMktV3] C:\games\JAM KT v3\JAMktv3.exe
Let's make sure it's clean
Go to this link
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

Use the browse button and navigate to this file on your hard disk
C:\games\JAM KT v3\JAMktv3.exe <-this file

Right click on the file and choose Select
Then use the Submit button
Let it finish scanning
Could you post back the results of the scan back here please

NOTE: You have Windows Defender installed, did any freezing problems start after you installed it?
It is beta, but when I had it installed I never had a problem with it
However, you are probably running the realtime protections from Defender, which is good
But you also have Spybot's TeaTimer running
Both protections doing about the same job
Can you do the following to make sure it's not conflicting
Leave Windows Defenders realtime protections running, you can ensure they are by opening Defender
Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and make sure Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
is checked and saved

Then open Spybot 1.4, Click on Mode>>advanced mode>>ok the prompt
Click on Tools a the bottom left>>Then Resident
UNCHECK ONLY "Resident teatimer"
Allow the change
Reboot the computer

See if the freezing persists

Will do. JAMs Tracker isnt the cause. the freezing began befiore I installed it. Its only a Killtracker for a game I play. I cannot find the Tools menu.  found an option called Resident IE but that's not it.. Now you mention it I think the Freezes may have begun after I installed defender but I cannot be sure.

EDIT: I found the tools menu. I wasn't in Advanced mode.

Try it with TeaTimer disabled for a bit and see if you get any freezing

I've tried a few realtime protections, without any problems
I never run mulitples however

I've used Windows Defender realtime protections for a couple months with no problems
I've uninstalled it since then however
At the moment I'm running with the TeaTimer enabled, again no problems

If you do find it's still freezing
Do the reverse, enable TeaTimer but disable Defender's realtime protections

You may be able to, by trial and error, see if either is the cause

Right I uninstalled SpyBot completly and left Defender running. Still freezes. It's really getting annoying now. What hardware components usually cause these sorts of problems and how are they fixed?

What does that accomplish?

Spybot's a great program
As I mentioned, Defender is the beta program
If anything, I would reinstall Spybot and run the TeaTimer

Then remove Windows Defender Beta 2
Here's how to remove it
To remove Windows Defender (Beta 2) from Windows 2000 or Windows XP:

1.On the Start menu, point to All Programs, and then click Windows Defender.

2.Exit Windows Defender (Beta 2). (Click the arrow next to the help icon and point to Exit Windows Defender).

3.On the Start menu, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove Programs.

4.Click Windows Defender.

5.Click Remove, and then in the dialog box that follows, click Yes.

Reboot the computer afterwards

See if you still get the freezing

Ok, try some more trial and error and see what happens

Reboot your computer into safe mode without networking
Use the computer in safe mode, see if you get any freezing

If no freezing, remain in safe mode
You should try this anyways

Go to START>>RUN>>type in msconfig

Under the STARTUP tab>>Disable ALL
Under the Services tab, put a tick in "Hide all Microsoft Services"
then click the "Disable All" button

Apply it and then Close
Don't just restart the computer
But shut down

Give it a minute and then
Restart back to Normal mode

You can use the computer online, but only at safe sites, and don't download anything, because we also disabled your AV
If you don't get a freezing, by trial and error, enable the services first and see if anything freezes
If no, then do the same with your Startup entries
Try and figure out if it's a software problem

If after, you disable everything and it still freezes, I've seen a bad video driver cause this problem
Go back to msconfig
Under the boot.ini tab, put a tick in /BaseVideo
apply and close, reboot
any freezing?

Thanks I'll try those later. But just now I go this crazy error when using Visual C++ 2005:

The screen went blue and it said Windows had been shut down.

KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR

***STOP: 0x00000077 (0xc000000E, 0xc000000E, 0x0000000, 0x00604000)

OK I disabled the services and startup programs as you said but still no joy. I'll try the Video Driver thing later but wouldn't that mean I couldn't use my Video Card effectivly?

Remember, we're using msconfig for troubleshooting purposes, this is one of those times
Let's just eliminate that it could be a video problem

I just made an interesting discovery. I think that certain things seem to set off a freeze. For example just now I was seraching for a certain function in a Microsoft Visual C++ Project. I had found the function once and I lciked Find Again and it froze. So restarted went back to my project did the same thing and again it froze when I tried to find the function a second time.

I don't know if it could be the CPU overheating. When i start my computer it says Check System Health! So I do so and find that altough my System Temp is pretty low (30 - 40 Degrees C) my CPU Temprature is reall high. Around 50 - 60 Degrees C and that's after it has been switched off for about 6 hours! I might try re-applying the silver thermal compund and see if it helps.

Now this is getting stupid. it's freezing more and more frequently. It must be a hardware problem as it's now starting to freeze before  Windows has even finished loading. It's either a CPU or a RAM problem. I think I'm going to replace my CPU (And my Motherboard to support the new CPU).
