Not sure if it will be any help, but let's take Allanon's advice and have a closer look

From my signature below, download and save too a permanent folder of it's own onto your harddrive
Hijackthis 1.99.1
Open Hijackthis.exe

Do a "SCAN and Save a Log file"
A log will open in Notepad
Copy and paste the WHOLE contents of the log  here... Don't try and fix anything yet----It is all important

You do have some issues, but not too bad
Can I see the following please to see what you have installed and how you maintain your computer
Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools section>>open Uninstall Manager
Click the SAVE LIST... button
Save the list to your desktop then copy and paste back here the WHOLE contents please

Well, let's see if we can do some cleaning

The free version of Bearshare is adware supported
The free version is not recommended to have installed on any computer
I'll leave that up to you, but I would opt to remove it from add/remove programs

Definitely access your add/remove programs and remove
Zango Search Assistant

Reboot the computer afterwards

Back in Windows
Download and HOLD onto these 2 free spyware scanners
Download and Install
Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06

Open Ad-Aware, ensure to click the  check for updates now link and Connect to download the latest updates

Click START
Click the radio button to Perform a Full system scan then click NEXT
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

RESTART your computer to finish the cleaning process

Back in Windows
Download and Install Spybot 1.4 from
HERE
 or HERE

After installation--Click the UPDATE button on the left
SEARCH FOR UPDATES on the right
Check, and then download all updates
After update is complete
Click the "Search & Destroy" button on the left
"Check for Problems"---When the Scan is complete
FIX all selected promblems in RED

RESTART the computer if any selected red entries were found and fixed

Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log

I don't see any anti-virus software on your computer
I highly recommend you install a free version if you don't have your own to install
Choose ONLY one of the following:
AVG 7 by Grisoft

Avast Home Edition by ALWIL

Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic

After installation of the one you choose, update and run a Complete system scan
Reboot the computer when it's done if anything was found and removed

Come back here and post one last hijackthis log
We just have some optional entries you don't need running on startup
Keep me advised how everything is running please

Back in Windows
Post back a fresh hijackthis log

Also, do the following again
close hijackthis and reopen it
Open Misc tools section>>open Uninstall Manager
Click the SAVE LIST... button
Save the list to your desktop then copy and paste back here the WHOLE contents please

Here's what I said about installing a new Anti-Virus software

Choose ONLY one of the following:

More than one active AV running in the background can cause operating system instabilities
Choose which one you like the best
Either Avast or AntiVir
keep one but uninstall the other
Reboot the computer afterwards

Hold onto Ad-Aware and Spybot, but remove ONLY one of the AV's that you installed

As mentioned earlier, you have some entries running on startup that could help eliminate some problems
If you don't want to fix them with Hijackthis

Go to START>>RUN>>type in msconfig
Under the Startup tab>>Uncheck the entries related too the following

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Reminder] "C:\Windows\Creator\Remind_XP.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_07\bin\jusched.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BearShare] "C:\Program Files\BearShare\BearShare.exe" /pause
O4 - Startup: BitTorrent.lnk = C:\Program Files\BitTorrent\bittorrent.exe

O4 - Global Startup: palstart.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Updates from HP.lnk = C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

Afterwards, click Apply>>Close

Reboot the computer again

Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log
Let me know if you still experience lag

If you do, you will have to supply some addresses to the websites your having problems with
See if I also experience lag on any of my computers

Can you let me know what this entry in your hijackthis log is related too

Is it safe, did you read the privacy policy before installing it?

When was the last time you defragged your harddrive?
When was the last time you cleaned your temp directories?
