i first tryed with mozilla.. then with IE, niether worked. IE froze for windows update (had to alt ctrl delete the page) and the trobuleshooter just stays there, nothing shows up on page.

I don't know what the heck is happening on your side
You more or less did a reinstall over the top and not a clean install

Can you open Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools section>>Open Hosts file manager
click the Open In Notepad button
A text file will open, copy>paste back here the whole contents please

Let's take a look at something

Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box to notepad, not including the word "code"
Paste it to the empty Notepad file
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as hosts.bat

Save this file on the desktop

Code: [Select]

dir %Systemdrive%\hosts /a h /s > files.txt
start notepad files.txt

Double click on hosts.bat
A text file will open, copy>paste back the whole contents

ok i think this reinstalling of xp rigged my rig. When i try to view a video i get this error

NPDSPLAY

Can not create DirectShow Player

Volume Serial Number is 0E46-18DE

Directory of C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\etc

Can you do the following

Save these commands to a text file on desktop
Close all browsers

One at a time, copy>paste each to the run command (Start>>Run) and hit OK after each

regsvr32 jscript.dll

regsvr32 msscript.ocx

regsvr32 dispex.dll

regsvr32 vbscript.dll

regsvr32 scrrun.dll

Find and delete this file

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\etc\hosts

Reboot your computer

Back in Windows
Open Hijackthis>>open misc tools section>>Hosts file manager
Should prompt that there is no hosts file. Let it create one
Open in notepad and copy>paste back the whole contents

that worked! where should i look?

omg now it's not working.....

im going to try to reinstall IE 6 again.. maybe IE is corrupted from reinstall, much like AVG was (had to reinstall AVG..)

Try the following
Open Internet Explorer, click Tools, click Internet Options, click Connections, click LAN
> Settings. Uncheck everything in this box
Which includes
"Automatically Detect Settings" and "Use Automatic configuration script"

OK and Apply it

Under the General tab>>delete cookies and files>Including offline content
Close IE

Go to start>>run>>type in
cmd
Hit OK
type in
ipconfig /flushdns
Hit OK

Restart computer
Any luck?

reinstall did not work, nor did ipconfig/flushdns
