Free and "LEGAL" XP x64!
« on: July 10, 2006, 01:02:10 PM »
Ok. There has been a lot of fuss about  craacking Windows XP Pro x64, and activation bypasses. Well if you are one of those people looking for these things, FORGET about it right now! I have found a way to make the trial version of XP x64 think it doesn't need to install the "time bomb" that goes of after 120 days. Here's what you need to do (You MUST read these instructions carefully!):

Step 1: Register for, and download the Windows XP x64 Trial Edition form the MS web site. Obviously MS will not track you down for doing this, so just use your real address.

Step 2: Open up the ISO. If you do not have a progam for this then you can download an evaluation copy of WinRAR, a progam great for handling compressed folders, available at www.rarlabs.com. There are also plenty of cracks for this program. Now, take all the stuff out of the ISO and put it in a folder on the desktop or wherever. You choose.

Step 3: Now go to the folder you placed the files in. Go to the AMD64 folder and find the file called "setupreg.hiv". Now open REGEDIT (Click Start, go to Run, and type regedit) OR (Go to "C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe"). Select "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" simply by clicking on it. Under the FILE menu, click on "Load Hive". Find the "setuprg.hiv" file, select it, and hit OPEN. Type "setupreg" in the Key Name box. The Hive will now be loaded under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\setupreg"

Step 4: Now that the hive is loaded, navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\setupreg\ControlSet001\Services\Setupdd\" in the left pane and Select the value form the right pane named "(No Name)" or "(Default)" (Whichever one it is. In any case, it is the first Value in the list). Double-click it so you can open it up and edit it. The Binary code writen in Hexadecimal corresponds to the 120 day limit. For example, you may see this:

0000 00 A3 02 00 00 00 00 00
0008 00 00 08 00 00 05 00 00
0010

This data may vary so don't worry if it says somthing else.

Now, double click to select a value and replace all the 2-digit values with "00" simply by typing "00" (Please note that these are zeros. There is absolutely no O's as in the letter, in hexadecimal):

Your data should look like this:

0000 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
0008 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
0010

Click Ok.

Step 5: Navigate back up the tree to "setupreg", select it, and click Unload Hive in the FILE menu. You will receive a prompt. Just click yes. Make sure it is Unloading Setupreg.key and nothing else. It will tell you what hive you are unloading. Now exit registry editor.

Step 6: Burn evrything you extracted in whatever folder in whatever directory, including the "setupreg.hiv" you edited (which should still be in the AMD64 folder).

Step 7: Download a bit-torrent with full version of Windows XP x64 from your favourite bit-torrent site (I like www.isohunt.com) and open the bit-torrent with your favourite bit-torrent program (I like µTorrent available at www.utorrent.com) and burn that on a CD, or borrow a copy from a friend (legit or not, doesn't matter).

Step 8: Restart your computer having the FULL version CD in a CD drive (legit or not, doesn't matter).
If your CD drive isn't set to first boot priority, change that now by going in to the motherboard's menu by pressing F1 or Del or whatever it asks to go into the menu durring POST (Power On Self Test). Your menus will vary so learn about it and DO NOT touch any settings if you don't know what you are doing (May result in system malfunctioning). When you boot up your computer, press any key when it prompts you to do so to Boot of CD.

Step 9: After the settup menu is 100% loaded (eg: it asks you to press ENTER to continue installing windows),
replace the full version CD with the trial CD you just hacked. Continue the setup normally and use the CD key given to you durring the registration for the Trial CD, and NOT the one that came with the Full version CD.

Step 10: Once installed, log onto Windows and click the balloon pointing to the Keys icon near the clock saying, Click here to activate windows or something. If you are now thinking " Oh no 14 days to activate, what do I do. I can't activate it because this Windows is Illegal!", then guess what. Activate IT! This OS thinks that it is legal, so does the MS web site, or anything else. Pure trickery.

Congradulations! You have now hacked a trial verson of Windows XP x64  and turned it into a "legal" full version. For Free! YAY. Now you can go to www.microsoft.com, download x64 version of Windows Defender or anything that needs a Genuine Windows Check, and it will be approved!

Has anybody who tried it had problems? Or did it work out for everybody? It worked fine for me so if you're having troubles, i might be able to help.

That's an old trick, I don't think it works anymore though.  You'll get rid of the Evaluation Version message on the desktop, it'll look like it's not a trial, but after the trial period it'll lock you out.  It worked up to Win2k I believe, and was fixed for XP.  Feel free to set your clock forward to double-check, that's the best way to check.  Set it forward a year, reboot, and if it lets you in, then it actually worked!

Yeah whatever I did it for my pc and I've been running XP x64 hacked this way for 6-7 months. I put the clock ahead a couple years and it didn't lock me out. Seems to be working 4 me. Well if someone wants to prove me wrong go ahead. If it truley doesn't woork and it fluked 4 me, then this info shouldn't be posted.

Great idea, just wondering though, can I install the modified trial on top of my current install, and keep all my current settings?
Oh and simply burning the contents of the ISO straight up using something like Nero will have the cd act as a boot cd?

I haven't tried doing a repair install to keep all my settings, and I have no idea if it would work or not. Somebody should try it. It is a good idea. And also, just burning the contents of the iso straight up with nero, or even windows built in cd burning feature will create a bootable cd.

Do we perform steps 7, 8 & 9 so that we can get the CD to boot? If you want the modified CD to boot, perform the changes to step 6, then follow the steps in Paul thurrott's guide from step 5 (we dont need to slipstream sp2, just burn our modified CD so that it boots)
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windo..._slipstream.asp

I hope this helps. Have fun!
