win98 install problem
« on: February 04, 2002, 05:55:32 AM »
I\'m trying to figure this one out...have fat32 partition on Toshiba laptop (first 988mb) and ntfs with win 2k on the next 5 gig. Win 2k works fine. Cant get win98 loaded on first partition. Have run  win98 boot disk, tried copying and extracting cabs etc........cant even get the old factory rescue disk to work. What I\'m working with right now is a downloaded copy of win98 se, all the files are there, burned it to a cd, and stuck it in the cdr of the laptop.....tried running install, setup, you name it. Is there something I\'m missing here??? I\'m sure there is...I\'ve also installed PartMagic, formatted the first partition fat32, checked for errors, etc. ANy suggestions? Thanks from stumped in Germany

You have to install 98 first to get that to work.  NT takes over the boot partition to manage the multiboot information.  No real way around that without using 3rd party software.  If you have installed NT first that is the problem.  You need to reformat and start over.  Someone else may be able to provide more details since I don\'t install DOS and NT OS on the same drive anymore.  Too many headaches.
Hope this Helps,

First format the partition then install win 98 and then install NT
