Cd-rw & DVD player (Mr Bell)
« on: July 22, 2006, 06:54:51 AM »
Ok Mr Questolo

Now I have an other problem that I would like to finally resolve also. You did so well in helping me remove the spyware and other junk in my computer. But I think this might be more of a challenge for you. My computer says that the drives devices are operating but when I put cd's in it says that there is no disk in the draw. And even if I try to boot up with one in the draw it doesn't recognize it. It looks like its reading it sure enough but NOTHING happens. I went to best buy to purchase a couple of new case fans and someone said the problem might be in Windows. I have nero, music match, and I deleted mpplayer.

Perhaps its a registry problem with Windows is what the guy said. I did a google search and tried one suggestion but that didn't work.

Hi again Mr. Bell
Let's make sure nothing is hiding
Maybe I should see that log from wpfind
Let's just rule out any malware, then we can see if it's a legit entry that's causing the problems

Download and save WinPFind.zip
UNZIP the contents to your desktop
Don't run it yet

RESTART your Computer into SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads
Choose Safe mode from the startup menu and hit Enter

In safe mode
Open the WinPFind folder you extracted to desktop
Double click on WinPFind.exe
Select "Configure Scan Options"
Under Run Addon's on the right hand side
Put a tick in all the empty boxes then click Apply

Click START SCAN
Let this finish, a log will open so you will know it's done
Close out after

Reboot back to Normal mode

Back in Windows
Post the results of the WindPFind.txt located in the WinPFind folder

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Is this running in two sections in this forum. Anyway I'll post what I found after trying to fix registry.

Then I'll check for more malware like you just posted and come back.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives\Volume{51ec65fc-b3ab-11d8-84ca-806d6172696f}

This is what I ended up with after I followed everything. At first the volume did not show. After closing a re open it did. I also have a dvd player. ( not recorder) This isn't working either

Anyway its still not working. Gosh I thought it was. It sure appears as if its trying to read it. I set music match as the default player but once again is says no disc in drive.

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Name the file as export.bat

Save this file on the desktop

Code: [Select]
@echo off
regedit /e C:\cp.reg "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}"
more C:\cp.reg >> C:\Display.txt
regedit /e C:\cp.reg "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives"
more C:\cp.reg >> C:\Display.txt
notepad C:\Display.txt

Okay, we now have a backup of those keys

Can, you try this
Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box to notepad, not including the word "code"
Paste it to the empty Notepad file
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
IMPORTANT>>>Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as fix.reg

Save this file on the desktop
Ensure to copy from REGEDIT4 and down in the code box

Code: [Select]
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives\Volume{51ec65fc-b3ab-11d8-84ca-806d6172696f}]
"Drive Type"=dword:00000002

Double click on fix.reg and allow to add/merge to the registry

Download>>Save>>then unzip to your desktop the file below
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/XP_CD-DVD-Fix.zip
Double click on XP_CD-DVD-Fix.exe

Nothing changed but both lights where flashing this time. On the cd draw and the red one on top of computer.
Also the plain DVD draw is the master and the cd draw is the slave.

If you go to START>>Run>>type in services.msc
In the list on the right hand side, scroll down to IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service
Double click on it
Is it set to Manual startup type?

If you enter your device manager
Right click MyComputer>>Select properties>>hardware>>Device manager
Expand DVD/CD Rom drives
Do you find any problems?

Did you remember anything that you may of installed or uninstalled, as in software, prior to the problems starting?

Have you checked the cable to the drives to ensure it's tightly seated?
Did you change anything inside the box before this happened?

Hmmm both these units haven't worked for some time now. Think there bad and need to be replaced? They act like there trying to read my cd but nothing else happens.

What about removing the drives in both and trying that? Of Course I've tried that in the past already.

This is still fun trying this stuff. Its keeping me way up past my bed time:)

It could be a possibility that both went bad, hmm
Are you trying just one cd or others?

I would disconnect the cd which is set as slave and try rebooting and see if it helps

Of course, if you have an extra cd or dvd player that you could try in the computer that would help

In device manager, have you tried uninstalling both devices and rebooting?
Do you need special drivers from the manufacturer or are they both Microsoft dependent
You will be able to find out in device manager

When expanded all it shows are the drives. No red flags there. The only thing I did once was disconnect them both and reboot my computer. Then connected them again and rebooted to see if that would work. And I installed a new video card a few months ago.

But last year my grand daughter was listening to cd's She was six years old and loves my computer. And she stuck in two cd's once by mistake into the same draw. I don't remember if that caused it to stop working at that time though.

And yes the ribin is connected tight.

I told you this would be a challenge my friend. Thanks for your fine effort. Looks like I'm in the market for some new hardware.

I did try other cd's including the cd's that came with the product (ie Compact).

One more question. Since it looks like my Cd-rw drive is trying to read my disks and its the slave drive. Could I disconnect the DVD one and just plug in the Cd-rw and make that one the master?

Just wondering???
