I'm just out the door on my way to work
In the meantime, can you do the following please

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Note: I'm going to lock your other thread you started, we'll deal with your outdated Antivirus when we are done here  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

INFECTED WITH SPYWARE!
« Reply #3 on: July 25, 2006, 10:14:45 PM »
Can you do the following please

==Download and install Windows CleanUp! 4.5.2

CleanUp! attempts to delete files from various temporary directories (including download directories/caches), as well as emptying the Recycle Bins.
If you make a habit of saving files that you wish to keep in any of these places,  they will be deleted when CleanUp! is run.
Please move them too a different location before we run this tool if the above is true
Note: It is generally considered poor practice to use temporary folders or the Recycle Bin to store files you intend to keep.

==Download, install, and update  Ewido anti-spyware
• Load Ewido and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Close Ewido. Do not run it yet.
Print and/or save the rest of these instructions to a text file saved to desktop

Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools section>>Open "Delete File on Reboot"
In the File name field, copy>>Paste the next line below in bold
Then hit the OPEN button

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winjjq32.dll

Hijackthis should prompt that the file will be deleted and too reboot the computer

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. To boot into Safe Mode, please restart your computer. Tap F8 before Windows loads. Select Safe Mode on the screen that appears.
Sign in with your normal user account

==Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

    * Empty Recycle Bins
    * Delete Cookies
    * Delete Prefetch files
    * Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
When it's done>>Click Close
DECLINE to Log off or Restart the computer
NOTE: The first time you run CleanUp! it may prompt to run in Demonstration mode
Deny this, we want to run the actual cleanup!!

==Open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process.  A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process
I'll need to see these later, by default they are also saved at C:\rapport.txt

If a reboot was required, reboot back to safe mode
If it wasn't required, remain in safe mode

Ewido Scan
  • Then run Ewido and click on the Scanner tab at the top and then click on Complete System Scan.  This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
  • Ewido will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
  • Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As".  This will create a text file.  Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
Reboot back to Normal mode

Post back the following please
1. Run Hijackthis again and post back a fresh log
2. Post the whole report from Ewido's
3. Post the log from Smitfraudfix>>C:\Rapport.txt

It may take more than one reply to include all the info

« Reply #5 on: July 26, 2006, 08:05:29 AM »
You still have a bad file, and a couple entries questionable
That Ewido report would of came in handy  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' />
Also appears you may have ran the fix from smitfraudfix more than once as the log is empty, that's alright however

Please download The Avenger.zip by Swandog46 to your Desktop.

    * Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
    * Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

Copy all the text contained in the quote box below  to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing the (Ctrl+C) on your keyboard

Quote
files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winjjq32.dll

Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop

    * Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
    * Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
    * Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
    * Click Done
    * Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
    * Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

Avenger should now Reboot your computer
Back in Windows

Download and Install Spybot 1.4 from
HERE
 or HERE

After installation--Click the UPDATE button on the left
SEARCH FOR UPDATES on the right
Check, and then download all updates
After update is complete
Click the "Search & Destroy" button on the left
"Check for Problems"---When the Scan is complete
FIX all selected promblems in RED

RESTART the computer if anything in Red was found and fixed

Come back here
1. Post a fresh hijackthis log
2. Post the whole log created by Avenger>>C:\avenger.txt

Could you also do the following
Go to this link
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

Use the browse button and navigate to this file on your hard disk
C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32_EXEC.exe<--this file in the exact location and filename

Right click on the file and choose Select
Then use the Submit button
Let it finish scanning
Could you post back the results of the scan back here please

==Download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.
* Save it to a folder or desktop
Open killbox.exe.
Select the option "Delete on reboot".
Click the button: All Files (!important!)
Now it should flash green.

Now copy ALL the next bold part:
The whole text in between the dotted lines
======================================

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winjjq32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32_EXEC.exe

======================================

Open 'file' in the killboxmenu on top and choose Paste from clipboard

Then press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it.
Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be removed on next reboot and asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES
If you don't get that message, reboot manually.

Your computer should reboot now.

Back in Windows
Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RUNDLL32] C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32_EXEC.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winjjq32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winjjq32.dll

The last entry may include (file missing), if everything went good with killbox

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot the computer

Back in Windows
Post a fresh hijackthis log please

If everything is running better
We should flush all your restore points
    Go to START>>RUN
    Type in
msconfig
Click OK
Click the "Launch System Restore" button
On the Left hand side click on "System Restore Settings"

Try the following
Download and save to your desktop the installer for either of the following
But don't install it yet,
ONLY download one, more than one AV can cause a conflict

Try either
Avast Home Edition by ALWIL
OR
AVG 7 by Grisoft

Once you have your new AV downloaded
Uninstall Norton's
Reboot the computer at the prompt
Back in Windows, Install your new AV

Hope that helps
Does your version Of Norton's Internet security also have firewall protection?
Do you plan on removing it and ensuring the XP firewall is enabled
Or do you also need a good free software firewall protection?

I like both AV's, but ONLY use one, you decide
Try Avast's it may be what your looking for

Firewall: If you decide to remove ALL of NIS including the firewall

There are 2 others I recommend that do a great job, again ONLY use one

Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall
the full version will become a free limited firewall after 30 days

Zone Alarm by Zonelabs

NOTE: If you have trouble removing NIS, post back and let me know what version it is
I can link you to Symantec's removal instructions
