« on: August 09, 2006, 10:22:49 AM »
hey, dad has asked me to fix his computer because when you start it up it is
very slow but the longer you use it the slower it gets. It also freezes sometimes
for no apparent reason.

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O16 - DPF: {D7BF3304-138B-4DD5-86EE-491BB6A2286C} - http://www.azebar.com/install/azesearch.cab

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot the computer

Back in Windows post a fresh hijackthis log

Have you ran ad-aware se personal 1.06 or Spybot 1.4 on this computer?
If unsure, don't download them from a bogus link, let me know and I will link you to them

Have you defragged this system lately?
Have you cleared temp folders?

EDIT>>This entry in your log
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [KamikazeKat] C:\Program Files\ScreenMates\KAMIKAZEKAT.EXE

« Reply #3 on: August 11, 2006, 03:57:53 PM »
When was the last time you defragged this computer?

I only ask about the Screenmates program, if it's free, many of these types of programs take up resources
They make their monies from sharing information and supplying advertising to your computer

Can you do the following
Quote
We had spybot on this computer untill it quit working then
I take it you may of had an older version of Spybot installed, that would be the reason it may of stopped working
Spybot and Avast are totally different programs
They won't interfere with each other

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - (no file)

I suggest that you tick the next one also
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CriticalUpdate] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wucrtupd.exe -startup

Associated with Windows updates, since support for Win9x has ended, it will do you no good
Manually visit windows updates and ensure you have the latest Critical updates installed

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot your computer

Back in Windows
Download and Install Spybot 1.4 from
HERE
After installation--Click the UPDATE button on the left
SEARCH FOR UPDATES on the right
Check, and then download all updates
After update is complete
Click the "Search & Destroy" button on the left
"Check for Problems"---When the Scan is complete
FIX all selected promblems in RED

RESTART the computer to finish any cleaning process and to clear from memory

Back in Windows post a fresh hijackthis log

Can you also open Ad-Aware
Under Initialization Status click on DETAILS
Let me know Reference Number and  Internal build

Sorry for the delay
Looks good, however, I see you have CCleaner installed
It's a good program, but when installing you MAY have not removed the check to install the Yahoo toolbar
It's not malware, but if you don't want it installed, you may want to remove it from add/remove programs
It has been know too cause some problems with users computers

Let me know how everythings running please
If you choose to remove the Yahoo toolbar, can you post a fresh hijackthis log please

I've never used the yahoo toolbar, so I can't comment on it's usefullness
But On my 98SE machine I prefer to use the free google toobar

On another note: I see you have DAP installed, if this is the free version
Be informed that it delivers popup/popunder ads, and tracks your internet usage. You can find safer alternatives here: http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads.php?cat=dlman#dlman
Your call.
