Adware/Spyware on my computer

Hi.

I am pretty certain I have some spyware/adware on my computer.
Any ideas on how to proceed and what to do to get rid of it ?

What makes you think you have spyware/adware on your computer?
Are you having problems?

Do you have either Spybot 1.4 and ad-aware se personal 1.06 installed?

I've noticed a lot of weird behaviour lately ... such as increased spam to my email accounts, loss of internet connection at random times, increased Norton pop ups from Norton about "potential attacks", etc ...

I have Norton installed and it doesnt report anything when I scan the computer but was wondering if there were some other recommended applications that I can run to make sure. Maybe I'm paranoid but would rather be safe than sorry.

I dont have any of the applications installed that you mentioned.

Any help is appreciated.

You should access your add/remove programs and remove
Viewpoint Manager, or anything else with ViewPoint named

Download and Install
Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06

Open Ad-Aware, ensure to click the  check for updates now link and Connect to download the latest updates
Close out after it is updated, as we will need it later
Open Ad-Aware SE 1.06
Click START
Click the radio button to Perform a Full system scan then click NEXT
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

RESTART your computer to finish the cleaning process

Download and Install Spybot 1.4 from
HERE

After installation--Click the UPDATE button on the left
SEARCH FOR UPDATES on the right
Check, and then download all updates
After update is complete
Click the "Search & Destroy" button on the left
"Check for Problems"---When the Scan is complete
FIX all selected promblems in RED

RESTART the computer to finish any cleaning process

Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log and let me know how things are running please

I followed your directions and ran the tools. Ad-Adware found nothing but Spybot found 14 instances that it fixed.

Below is the new HJT log file.

Are these entries valid ? They seem slightly suspicious and can they be cleaned up ?

Hijackthis often reads it wrong and adds the 'file missing' at the end of it
If you have it installed you can leave that entry

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)


In addition, the following don't need to be running on startup, up to you
You can tick them too

Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Access your add/remove programs again
Remove any older updates and version of Java, they are a security risk
This includes
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
You will know which ones they are by the placement of the coffee cup icon in front of them

If you didn't intentionally install
Party Poker remove it too, sometimes online poker software can unintentionally be installed with other software
If you did intentionally install it you can leave it alone

Reboot the computer after doing all of the above

Back in Windows
Access the following link to update to the newest Java
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Save the Windows Offline installer to desktop
Double click to install and follow the prompts
When it's done installing you can delete the installer from desktop

Post back and let me know how things are running please
