I have decided to get Linux. So, what I need to know is, can I install it on a separate hard drive? I want to keep XP on my C: drive and I want linux on my D: drive. Can I do this?

Oh yeah, also, what is the best Linux OS? I've heard Ubuntu and Xandros are the best...

Yes it is possible. Look into Partitioning. Most Linux os's will create a bootloader for you anyway depending on if you select the right place to install it, then when you turn your pc on you will get the black microsoft screen saying


"Microsoft Windows XP Professional"
"Unbuntu #version"

and you can select what one you want to boot up.

If you go to the ubuntu web site you can download an image file that when you burn it to a disk it will either let you run ubuntu from the disk for trial purposes or install the operating system.If you run it fro the disk it does not install or change your present operating system this is the best way to begin learning about an alt os.

im a fan of red hat so if you want to go the cheap route go for fedora core. its the free project that red hat is working on. its really nice i have 3 servers at my house running on it.
