Could you PLEASE help with this - Win98 Upgrade CD
« on: March 09, 2002, 07:24:09 PM »
I had Windows 2000 on my computer - everything was fine until I attempted to upgrade my BIOS.  After that my PC still worked but WIndows 2000 would not boot up - I get the same blue screen at start-up every time, even if I reinstall clean.

So now, having given up on 2000, I want to at least have 98 back.

Problem -  I own the WINDOWS 98 UPGRADE CD!!!!

This checks for a previous install of Windows.  For me it obviously detects nothing and so won\'t install.  I\'ve tried creating a Windows directory and using EDIT.COM to create files under the names USER.DAT and SYSTEM.DAT but the registry checker won\'t be fooled - it says there\'s a problem it can\'t fix and the Windows 98 setup exits, again!

So what the heck am I supposed to do?  There MUST be a way of fooling the Windows 98 upgrade CD into thinking I have a previous WIndows installation!!!

Help!!!

Did you booting from your Win2000 CD and choosing the repair installation option?  It should repair your master boot record.  Just a thought.

To repair your master boot record just make a bootdisk in Win98, or get one from www.bootdisk.com, boot to the floppy and at the dos prompt type \"fdisk /mbr\", Done!

Hi... Thanks for your replies.

Unfortunately I have already tried this - which makes the problem even more mysterious.  I\'ve tried this and every repair option imaginable, plus completely new installations, formatting/repartitioning my HDD, etc.

The blue screen I get, every time, no matter what the installation is, is:

***STOP: 0x0000006B (0x00000185, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED

And of course... I don\'t know what the heck this means!

Did you restet your bios after you did the bios update? if you dont you can encounter a problem like you have. Also if you had win2k installed and it was formated to NTFS file system win98 not going to do any good
If you did reset your bios, try this , use your 4 win2k boot disks click new for a new install , when asked where it should go  delete that partition that was being used and then re partition it then format and install.

All you need is an earlier version of Windows OS.  If you have a WIN95 CD or floppy just insert it when it asks for the previous version.  It will check it and then install WIN 98.  It might even work with a WIN 3.0 or 3.1 or DOS 6.2, but I am not sure.

you can try to reflash the bios using the same bios u flash before. but did you using the bios that is provided by your board manufacturer?. better double check everything before you update the bios.  after flash reset the bios. then you can try load the best setting for your pc. still having problem , ? then you can contact the board manufacturer for advice.

Yes any older version of Windows/DOS while checking for pervious OS.  Just put in the CD or floppy disk and specify the source of the pervious OS.  If you use an OS that comes on disks, then it will prompt you to put in multiple disks.  So, if you know somebody or have a copy of Win95 on CD, just use that.  Once it copies over some files, it will prompt you to insert the Win98 CD again.  I have done that since Win95 Upgrade CD came out.  I know for sure it works with Win95, 98, Win2k Pro, and ME (the worst OS since Windows 3.0).  I hope this helps.
