Windows Boot Screens

My problem is this.  I have windows xp home edition.  I downloaded a file from themexp.  it didnt work.  messed up my computer nicely too.  it may have been corrupt, i dont know.  Anyways, i made my own using this tutorial.  it worked, however not the way i wanted it to.  when i load up my computer, instead of displaying the new screen, i get just a black screen with home edition (the white logo number 8 or 9 maybe, that i didnt change) and the three bars that scroll across.  nothing else.  Does anyone know how to fix this problem.  i think it may be a palette problem, because the original image uses only 16 colors.  is this a known problem?  can someone help steer me in the right direction?
