Hello and read all before you do anything please.

First download this and try it. It is form download.com
here is the link    http://www.download.com/Startup-Inspector-...tml?tag=lst-0-4

To get things not to run on start up go to start then run
In run type msconfig
click on the start up tab
Click on any thing that you don't want. I recommend that you search google so that you don't click on anytihng that you need.
I do know that nothing from google does not need to run on start up and you cn disable all of them.
Itunes doesn't need to.
Mcafee doesn't eaither but i recommend that you keep that running at all times.
Windows messenger does not need to run on start up eaither.

This is a tough question
Pure blood is leading you on the right track

Of course, we can have no idea what you want installed on the computer
Is this a trial version of McAfee's?
Do you want Google Desktop Search installed?
Do you want Party Poker and Absolute Poker installed?

These are personal preference, you decide

If it's a trial of McAfee's
You may want to remove it and try a free AV and Firewall

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

I deactived most things, but then it wants me to put fire wall on and always wants updates. The main problem is that its just constantly asking me questions and popping up telling me to register for virus protection. It has reduced since I elminated most fo the startup menu, thanks.

Also my brother just brought him his computer and the internet is having a major problem. When you try to load a URL it automatically loads something about streetracing but it fails to load and keeps trying. I am unable to load any pages.

Since your brothers computer does have malware installed
Let's deal with it first
On your brothers computer

I need to see a few logs, you will have to transfer them from one computer to the other
I don't like to see Hijackthis running from a temp folder
Redownload Hijackthis from my signature below and save it to your brothers computer in it's own folder of it's own
ONLY run hijackthis from this new location

Post a fresh hijackthis log
As well as the fresh hijackthis log
I would like to see another log from Hijackthis
Close Hijackthis then REOpen it>>Open MISC TOOLS SECTION>>Open UNINSTALL MANAGER
Click the SAVE LIST... button
Save the list to your desktop then copy>>Paste back here the Whole contents

I was a little confused about the directions of the fresh hijack I hope I did it right. On the program list I actually went through a week ago and cleared a lot of garbage out but I was unable to get rid of napster or kazaa and wasnt sure what else would be good to delete. and I believe the bad URL name is grandstreetinteractive that keeps trying to load while I use the internet.

New computer is cluttered
« Reply #6 on: September 12, 2006, 08:44:13 PM »
Let's do some cleaning and see if we can get you back online

Go to the following link
http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html
Using procedure #4
Download and save the uninstaller to floppy or transfer to the desktop of the infected computer
Don't run it yet

Access your add/remove programs via control panel
Uninstall the following
Don't reboot the computer yet

MediaLoads
twain-tech
Web Savings from Ebates
Web Search

If he doesn't use any of the Poker programs uninstall them too
Pacific Poker
Paradise Poker
PartyPoker

Finally remove Ad-Aware as it is terribly outdated
Ad-aware 6 Personal

Remove what you can from the above then Reboot the computer
Back in Windows

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://www.search-explorer.net/search_page.php

I completed all the steps. The bad URL is no longer there, but it says cannot connect to server, its my 3rd computer on my router, should work. I could not delete Twain tech.

We'll worry about twain-tech later
The connection problem is probably due to some leftovers corrupting your connection
We will need a tool to help repair this

Can you download and transfer to the desktop of the computer offline
LSPFix.exe from here
http://cexx.org/lspfix.htm
Open LSPFix.exe
Let me know what you see on the Keep side and what you see on the Remove side

With all other windows closed
Run LSPfix.exe again

This time put a tick in I know what I'm doing
Then click the Finish button at the bottom right corner of the screen
Follow any prompts

Reboot the computer

Back in Windows
That should get you back online
If you are, do the following
To remove Kazaa
You will need an Extracting utility to unzip a file, I didn't see one in your uninstall list
You should have one installed anyways
Many use the trial version of Winzip
I prefer the free full version of IZARC
Can be downloaded from this link
http://www.izarc.org/index.html

After you have IZArc installed, Download, Save>>Then Extract (Unzip) to it's own folder on the desktop
KazaaBegone
Open the folder you extracted the zip file too and run KazaaBegone.exe
and let it 'Search and Destroy all installed components'

Download and Install  to finish any cleaning pro
Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06

Open Ad-Aware, ensure to click the  check for updates now link and Connect to download the latest updates

After it has been updated
Click START
Click the radio button to Perform a Smart system scan then click NEXT
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

RESTART your computer to finish the cleaning process
===================================

Download and Install Spybot 1.4 from
HERE

After installation--Click the UPDATE button on the left
SEARCH FOR UPDATES on the right
Check, and then download all updates
After update is complete
Click the "Search & Destroy" button on the left
"Check for Problems"---When the Scan is complete
FIX all selected promblems in RED

RESTART the computer

Back in Windows

I don't see any Anti-Virus software on the computer
Itis not safe being online without AV realtime protections
If you don't have your own to install
I very much recommend you install ONLY one of the next free AntiVirus software
More than one active AV running in the background can cause problems
AVG 7 by Grisoft
OR
Avast Home Edition by ALWIL

After it's been installed, ensure it is updated and run a full system scan
Let it fix whatever it finds
Reboot one last time

come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log afterwards

Everyone is working! I am posting from computer. Thank you, you saved me many fights for trying to get the computers from my family. Would you suggest the AVG 7 for my new computer. I keep getting mcafee popup wanting me to register but I just hit, maybe later. Should I just get rid of it?

That's looking good now
We should flush all your restore points to ensure you don't restore your computer to an infected point
and also start you off with a fresh, clean restore point
Read the following link, ensure you reeable system restore when done
http://www.pchell.com/virus/systemrestore.shtml
Protect yourself against Future Attacks
*Install  SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 by JavaCool
    *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"

*Make sure your Anti-Virus software is always kept up to date and actively running in the background
Setting your AV to Autoupdate is a very smart move

Update and do scan's with your Anti-Spyware programs on a regular basis
In addition>>Open Spybot 1.4
Click on Immunize>>OK>>Immunize at the top green cross
Do the above after every update

Stay safe  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

If you still need a hand with your XP machine, Post a fresh hijackthis log please

Ensure to run a Disk Cleanup and Disk Dragment on this machine

Are you totally relying on your NAT router as firewall protection
Or would you like a piece of software to also help with outgoing connections?

I was just wondering if I should uninstall Mcafee. I dont want it, will it effect anything by uninstalling it? One more question but this is for my other old XP with 70 of 80 gig of my hard drive used on it. What would disk defragmenter do?

Did McAfee come preinstalled with your Dell computer?

If it was, I would remove all of McAfee
Reboot the computer
Install AVG afterwards

Ensure the XP firewall is enabled after you remove it
Would you like a better firewall than the one XP provides
Let me know, I can supply a link

Disk Defragmenter
