My C: Drive loses memory everytime i startup

I have had this problem for a while now but i just ignored it, everytime i would restart or reboot my computer I would go check my C: drive and within the first 10 seconds of the computer being turned on it would just jump down 10 Mb. A While ago i used to have about 1.5 Gb in that drive but now I'm down to 300 Mb. http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':huh:\' /> I cant believe how much it added up...

I had the same problem a while ago, It was the Win32-P2P.Alcan.A. worm or something like that. I went to this site and got rid of it about a year ago. I found that old worm by using Adaware but this time Adaware can't find anything wrong with my computer... I'm wondering if it could be the same worm or something else.

I also went to my "Folder Options" and unchecked the "Hide Protected Operating System Files" and I found an "Uploads" Folder full of garbage I never downloaded. I have a feeling it's that old worm I used to have or something like it, but my Adaware can't detect it.

Can someone please help me? Sorry about all the reading and Thank you in advanced.

Open Hijackthis.exe

Do a "SCAN and Save a Log file"
A log will open in Notepad
Copy and paste the WHOLE contents of the log  here... Don't try and fix anything yet----It is all important

Ensure that you aren't controlling any entries on startup with msconfig
If you are
Go to start>>run
type in msconfig

Under the Startup tab>>enable all
Under the Services tab>>enable all
Under the General tab select Normal

Apply and Close but don't reboot the computer yet

==Download this file - Combofix.exe and save it too desktop
Double click combofix.exe
At the prompt select Y on your keyboard and then hit <Enter> on keyboard
It will take a few minutes to complete
When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Post the log from Combofix and a fresh hijackthis log please

Can you ensure that you have went into msconfig and reenabled Everything on startup
under the startup tab
Select Normal startup under the general tab
Apply>>Close

Restart the computer and post a fresh hijackthis log afterwards

We don't need to hide the bad guys. We need to get rid of them

I followed your instruction but when i restarted the computer it was stuck at a Biostar loading screen. So I had to restart the computer 3 times until it got passed that screen and then I got some kind of error message for WJView or something. Anyway here is the HiJackThis Log

Can you delete all the files you don't recognize in the UPLOADS folders

Please supply an uninstall list from Hijackthis
Open Hijackthis>>Open MISC TOOLS SECTION>>Open UNINSTALL MANAGER
Click the SAVE LIST... button
Save the list to your desktop then copy>>Paste back here the Whole contents

Is "accoona" your preferred search bar, assistant?

Accoona? Now that you mention it I don't even know what Accoona is, but a while back I think Adaware detected a virus with accoona in the name. That would make a lot of sense.

Can you create a .reg file for me please
Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box, not including the word "code"
Paste it to the empty Notepad file
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as Export.bat

Save this file on the desktop

Code: [Select]
regedit /e Export.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSCONFIG"
Double click on Export.bat
A text file will open, copy>>paste back here the whole contents please

  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement[/i]".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation Multi-language
Save the file to your Desktop.
Don't install it yet

Access your Windows Control panel and open the Java Icon
Under the General tab click "Delete Files"
Leave all 3 selections selected and click OK

Access your Add/Remove programs via control panel
Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v1.3.1_04
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1_02
They should have the following icon next to it:  
Select it and click Remove all of them

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.accoona.com/search_assistant/ac...mpaign=wdz0605a

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Double click on remove.reg and allow to add/merge to the registry

Reboot your computer

Back in Windows, Install the latest version of Java from the installer on desktop
Follow the prompts
After installation, you can delete the installer on desktop

Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log
Also, double click on Export.bat again and post the contents of the text file that open

I did everything you said until you told me to Double click on remove.reg, could you tell me where that is?

Also when I tried to Uninstall Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1_02 I clicked on Change/Remove and nothing happened so I clicked on it again and still nothing happened, so i closed and reopened Add/Remove Programs and it was still there except it had no size. Im not even sure if it was removed, but since it had no size I continued anyway. Should I have continued with your instructions up to the remove.reg point?

Ooops I'm sorry I didn't make that last post clear, I meant I couldn't find a file called "remove.reg" was it supposed to be created after the HiJackThis Fixed Check? Looks good, how is everything running?

Can you open Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools section>>Open Uninstall Manager
Highlight Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1_02
and then click "Delete This Entry"
Ok the prompt

One entry in your log may indicate a corruption in the notify key from Windows updates
Can you manually visit Windows updates and run an Express scan and ensure your High Priority updates are right up to date

I would add Spybot 1.4 to your system
Another great anti-spyware scanner, yours for free

Download and Install Spybot 1.4 from
HERE

After installation--Click the UPDATE button on the left
SEARCH FOR UPDATES on the right
Check, and then download all updates
After update is complete

Click the "Search & Destroy" button on the left
"Check for Problems"---When the Scan is complete
FIX all selected promblems in RED

RESTART the computer to finish any cleaning process


Did you purposely install these 2 programs?

Yeah I Installed those Reg Fixes in hopes of fixing the computer... I'll uninstall them. Everything is running much better than before, but I'm still having the memory loss problem. For some reason everytime I turn on the computer the C: drive losses 10 Mb of memory. I have other drives with much much more memory than the C: so I'll just use those.
