delete MBR, can\'t boot
« on: April 26, 2002, 12:47:04 PM »
i recently attempted to install 98 se on my computer
i had two partitions one w/ w2k on it and my other partition fat32 was formatted
i started the 98 install and it finished the first part and then it rebooted to finish the rest of the install and now it hangs
won\'t boot to a cd or floppy
i\'ve changed boot sequence w/ no avail
virus protection isn\'t on
i can\'t access a command prompt no matter what i do
i\'ve used boot disks, OS cds and my computer still won\'t boot
it goes to a screen with _ in the corner and that\'s it
now i know my drives are configured correctly \'cause the cmos can autodetect my hard drive and my cdrom and boot floppy seek was turned on and i heard it read the floppy (of course that option is for before it actually boots)
so cmos sees everything correctly but when i exit cmos and the post checks out, it only sees the cd rom and not my primary ide (my hard drive) but cmos sees the hard drive
so basically how can i get a command prompt or format my drive so i can start from scratch?
any ideas?

You must be able to boot from a floppy disk with an msdos system on it f.e .Win98 setup floppy disk
and the you must come into a:
If you cannot get get C:  then the mbr is corrupted .Try  FDISK /MBR
fdisk mbr repairs the master boot record .
If you can get on C: you can try to copy
the files NTLDR , NTDETECT.COM and BOOT.INI  to a floppy , and boot from it .

part of the problem is that i can\'t access a command prompt
it won\'t boot up to anything
after the ram count at the beginning it sees just my cd rom
but if i go to cmos it sees cd rom and hard drive
so how can i get a command prompt?
it won\'t boot to a boot disk or an OS cd it just sits on a screen with a _ in the corner and thats it

If you have tried to boot off of everything possible, and it still does not work, try to reset your BIOS to its default/failsafe settings. If it will still not boot, you are going to have to take the HD and plug it into another computer, and try to format it like that.

I suppose you can allways boot from a floppy with an msdos system on it and you will allways get to a: , or there must be something wrong with the bios , or the floppy must be defective , or badly connected .It can be a lot of things ,
I remember having a computer with only a floppy and no harddisk working perfectly (The old Atari st).
If you cannot get on your harddisk after getting to a: , it can allso be a defective mbr or another problem .
