Needing some help with an old pc
« on: November 29, 2006, 11:27:14 AM »
I had a problem with my newer pc before and came here and you guys were great, now that pc has when on the fritz and has to go into the shop so I had to pull out my old pc and I fear it's infected with alot of crap the cpu is running at 100% at times when nothing is running and the system is being really sluggish also sometimes when theres alot of stress on the cpu my mouse cursor will freeze up on screen, I can still move the mouse around and click on things I just have an invisible cursor( I thought this was a driver issue but I have erased and reinstalled drivers tons of times and it still happens ) . So I came here for some assistance. Just tell me what you need me to do and it will be done, and I greatly appreciate any help that is givin to me.

Needing some help with an old pc
« Reply #2 on: November 29, 2006, 10:06:33 PM »
Can you do the following please
Can we disable SpySweeper so it won't interfere with any fixes we try

To disable SpySweeper:

Open it, click > Options over to the left then > click the Program tab > Uncheck "Start Spy Sweeper at Windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields"

    * Click the "Internet Explorer" tab and and uncheck all there.
    * Click the "Windows System" tab and uncheck all there.
    * Click the "Host File" tab and uncheck all there.
    * Click the "Startup Programs" tab and uncheck "Startup Items Shield".

Download this file - Combofix.exe and save it too desktop
We'll need it later

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = search.naupoint.com

Needing some help with an old pc
« Reply #4 on: November 29, 2006, 11:25:31 PM »
You appear to be running 2 software firewalls on your computer
ZoneAlarm and AVG's firewall
It's not a good idea having more than one Firewall running as it can cause conflicts

Recommend you only use one, uninstall only one of the firewall software

Reboot
Please supply an uninstall list from Hijackthis
Open Hijackthis>>Open MISC TOOLS SECTION>>Open UNINSTALL MANAGER
Click the SAVE LIST... button
Save the list to your desktop then copy>>Paste back here the Whole contents

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

Needing some help with an old pc
« Reply #7 on: November 30, 2006, 11:18:13 PM »
I'm still around, just trying to catch up on all logs
Just about back to speed again

I suggest that you do the following
We should update your version of Java
Malware can exploit the holes in older versions

Can you do the following
==Download the latest version of  Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 10
 • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
 • Click the "Download" button to the right.
 • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
 • The page will refresh.
 • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation Multi-language
Save the file to your Desktop.
Don't install it yet

Open your Windows control panel>>Start>>control Panel
Ensure you are in Classic view
Double click to open the Java Icon>>Under the General tab click "Delete Files"
Leave all 3 selections checked and click "OK"
Exit Java

Access your Add/remove programs via Control Panel
Remove the following
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v1.3.1_04
Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
Viewpoint Media Player
WildTangent Web Driver

After the following are removed

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {598F4775-6FB6-477B-9842-E0426824E077} - C:\DOCUME~1\User\LOCALS~1\Temp\~DP22.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [OSS] c:\windows\system32\ossproxy.exe -boot
O23 - Service: AOL Spyware Protection Service (AOLService) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\AOL\AOLSPY~1\\aolserv.exe (file missing)

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot the computer

Back in Windows
Double click on the Java installer you saved earlier
follow the prompts
After installation you can delete the installer from your desktop

Find and delete the following file and folder
C:\windows\system32\ossproxy.exe <-file
C:\Program Files\ICOO Loader <-folder

Download and Install Spybot 1.4 from
HERE

After installation--Click the UPDATE button on the left
SEARCH FOR UPDATES on the right
Check, and then download all updates
***You will get a Green check next to all successful downloads, if a download was not successful
Recheck for updates and redownload until all are successfully marked with a Green Check
After updating
Click the "Search & Destroy" button on the left
"Check for Problems"---When the Scan is complete
FIX all selected promblems in RED

Reboot the computer again

Post one last hijackthis log and let me know how things are running please

Do you know what this program is related too found in add/remove?

No I don't, and when I try to remove it from the add/remove programs list it gives me a yes or no option with some giberish question and no matter what I click it won't remove itself from the list. I'll have the logs shortly, appreciate all your help by the way.

Needing some help with an old pc
« Reply #10 on: December 01, 2006, 11:37:45 AM »
you have any advice on how to get rid of that file ?

Also theres a program running in task manager called update.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\S-1-5-18\dd5f937d0efd28640769c02449cb1c5f\update\update.exe

I don't have anything running or have anything that should be updating so what should I do about it

[edit]

I was able to start in safe mode and remove the ƒ}ƒ}ƒNƒ‰ƒu listing in control panel.

I'm still having troubles with this mouse though, I don't know what could be causing the cursor to freeze up on screen like that and me still be able to move the mouse around and click on stuff, I just can't see the cursor other than the one frozen on the screen. I've tried different types of mice PS2 and USB ball mice and USB optical mice and I've tried removing and installing the newest drivers for all types yet I still have the same problem. Kinda sucks to be afraid to open a program/folder for fear of my cursor freezing and me having to restart to get it back. Can't wait for my other pc to return from service.

AVG firewall now appears to be working properly since you uninstall ZoneAlarm
NOTE: I see an entry related to AOL Antispyware but don't see the product installed

Can you do the following
Go to START>>>RUN>>>type in services.msc
Hit OK
In the next window, look on the right hand side for this service
name---- Workstation NetLogon Service

In the drop down menu, change the startup type to Disabled on the following
AOL Spyware Protection Service
Apply and OK it

Also, for troubleshooting purposes do the same for the following entry
Content Monitoring Tool

Reboot the computer

Post back one last hijackthis log and let me know how things are running please

Still having preoblems with the mouse, and the comp is still responding slowly. if I right click anywhere it takes 5-10 seconds for the popup to appear. the update.exe program keeps popping up in task manager and when it does cpu usage jumps to 100 %

update.exe belongs to Windows updates

It looks as if your set to Autoupdate and it's trying to download and install some updates
Are you ready to install IE7?
It's not a bad upgrade from IE6

Beforehand, to be safe, create a fresh System Restore point
START>>Programs>>Accessories>>System tools>>system restore
Click Create a new Restore point>>Name it and click Create

Why don't you try manually going to Windows updates thru IE>>TOOLS>>Windows updates and do an Express scan
Download and install all High Priority updates

Reboot afterwards>>revisit Windows udpates to ensure you have all High Priorities

See if that helps

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Are you still receiving high CPU usage?

Can I see a fresh uninstall list from Hijackthis

When I asked you to do this
Quote
Can you do the following
Go to START>>>RUN>>>type in services.msc
Hit OK
In the next window, look on the right hand side for this service
name---- Workstation NetLogon Service

In the drop down menu, change the startup type to Disabled on the following
AOL Spyware Protection Service
Apply and OK it

Also, for troubleshooting purposes do the same for the following entry
Content Monitoring Tool

What services did you disable?
I made a mistake with the entry related to Workstation earlier
Did you disable anything related to it?

Needing some help with an old pc
« Reply #19 on: December 05, 2006, 12:11:18 PM »
I tried to turn it on the next morning after updating with windows installer and the OS is corrupt and is missing a file and can't boot so I'm probably going to have to do a restore. I just got my other pc back sorry it took so long to respond.
