XP ghost to new computer

I have a new computer coming and I would like to ghost my old hard drive over to the new one (I am not worried about activation).  Has anyone tried this, is XP smart enough to recognize the new hardware as it starts up?  Save me a lot of work re-installing everything.

Yes, actaully it is smart enough to recognize it. I have a friend whos PC I set up for him at my home. I never realized how anal XP would be. When I did the install, I used my keyboard, mouse & monitor. He got it home, turned it on, no problem. The first time that he had to restart the PC, NOTHING, just a \"Windows is Starting Up\" every time.

I finally did a reinstall, the correct way, with ALL of his hardware and no problems since.

BTW, his copy of XP was legit.

Do you mean then that the computer was not good until you re-installed XP, or after he started it with his equipment it found the new equipment and was happy?

Yes, when he got his case home and plugged his keyboard, monitor and mouse into it and started it, it worked fine until the reboot, thats when it decided to do some kind of a freeze up.

For some reason I guess it was too many hardware changes at once, although I\'ve heard that your\'re allowed like 6 in 6 months. I\'m just not sure about how many items can be changed at the same time.
