Win2000 \'Paint\' Error (mspaint.exe)
« on: February 13, 2001, 07:08:38 AM »
I get the following error when starting to start \"Paint\".  This all started when I defragged the drive & stopped before it was done.  I have since degragged completely, ran \"sfc /scannow\" completely, but no fix.  Any Idea\'s?
How could I \'re-install\' \"Paint\"?   I use it all the time (at least I used to).................THANKS!

Application popup: DDE Server Window: mspaint.exe - Application Error : The instruction at \"0x76fc7103\" referenced memory at \"0x00000058\". The memory could not be \"written\".

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

Uninstall MSPaint in add/remove windows programs.  Then reinstall it, it should work fine then.  Keep us posted.

I don\'t have \'MSPAINT\' in any of the options in \'Add/Remove Windows Components\'.
There is only networking stuff in there.............Thanks for your help!

Okay, put in your Windows 2000 CD.  Look for a file called mspaint (no extension) in the i386 folder.  Open this file with Winzip (I know winzip 8 works) and extract mspaint.exe to c:winntsys32

let me know if thos works

3 files, \"mspaint.ch_  -  mspaint.ex_  -  and  mspaint.hl_\"  exist in the I386 directory.  I don\'t know how to extract these.  Is there any chance that I could get the \"mspaint\" file elsewhere to extract?????

Double click the mspaint.ex_ and open it with winzip.  That should work fine for you.  Or give me your email and I will send it over to you.

Extracted it to Winnt/system32 & it overwrote existing file...........but I still  get:
Application popup: Paint: mspaint.exe - Application Error : The instruction at \"0x76fc7103\" referenced memory at \"0x00000058\". The memory could not be \"written\".

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

I hate the thought of reloading windows for this!

From Event Viewer:

File replacement was attempted on the protected system file c:winntsystem32mspaint.exe. This file was restored to the original version to maintain system stability. The file version of the system file is 5.0.2150.1.

I tried attrib -r but it did not work........................
Thanks!

Any ideas on how to get around the Windows \'file protection\' to re-install mspaint?  I hate like hell re-install W2000
for this......Microsoft won\'t help because my Product ID has \'OEM\' in it and IBM says to reload.......That sucks!
Any help would be appreciated...............

You must overwrite the file located in the \"File Protection Service\" folder, which is C:WINNTSYSTEM32DLLCACHE.  This folder is normally hidden from prying eyes, but Windows will reveal it to you if you ask it nicely...

Make sure you replace the MSPAINT.EXE in that folder before any other copies of the file you may have.

On a separate note, have you tried running MSPAINT from another folder, like your desktop?  If you still get the same error...maybe your problem isn\'t MSPAINT at all....:-)

Find the file \"sysoc.inf\" located in \"N:Winntinf\"
where N is your winnt partition.  Open sysoc.inf in Notepad.
Look for the words \"HIDE\" and \"hide\".  Delete any instance of these but make sure you leave the commas.  IE. change \"blah blah blah,HIDE,blah\" to \"blah blah blah,,blah\".  Save file once you have removed all the hides.  Now go into add/remove programs and you should have many more options in the add/remove windows components window.  Now use add/remove to remove paint and then add it back.  This may work
