ACCESS DENIED on my HD
« on: July 27, 2002, 10:57:35 PM »
Here\'s a  tricky one:

I was having problems with my windows installer not functioning correctly, so after trying a couple of MS\'s suggested fixes with unsatisfactory results, I opted to do a repair with the Win2k install CD.

Originally I did a fast repair, noted that there were issues copying NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM and other root files.  Since the only option was to ignore or quit the installation, I continued, figuring that these files were safe and not needing to be updated anyway.

When the repair was complete, during reboot it told me that NTLDR could not be found.

I entered the Recovery Console expecting to simply copy the files from my CD to c:, but I continually receive the \"ACCESS DENIED\" error any time I try to copy files from any location to the other.

I\'m completely stumped, and can\'t seem to find a way around this lockout.  I really do not want to reformat, so if you could please recommend a solution, I\'ll be extrememely suprised and pleased.

PS. the drives are striped RAID 0

well, here you go.

a while ago you probably removed the everyone group off the root of the hard drive, this was for added security or something like that.

then you may have had some problems with the page file size or something like that.

you then started up the repair and it could copy over the ntdetect.com ntldr arclrd arcsetup, something like that. these are the files being copied to the root of the hard drive.

Well now you have three options. format the hard drive and reinstall, or install a different hard drive as the master and install w2k to it. reset the permissions on the hard drive that is broken, the put the hard drives back where they should be. and last create a floppy formatted in windows 2000 with boot.ini ntldr ntdetect.com and try to boot off it to gain access to the system.

Good luck.

Assuming you are using NTFS, try using NTFSPRO if you have it.  Boot like a normal dos boot disk then copy the original CD files back to the HD.  I have had this work before.  Of course the situation was a little different.  Otherwise Tracky110XP has already presented you only real options.
Hope this Helps,

When you make a floppy with :
ntldr -ntdetect.com -boot.ini  (copied from c:) ,
you often will  be able to enter your system in case of ntldr not found .
This doesn\'t help in case of  a corrupt system .
