Bootable 98 CD...Possible?
« on: August 05, 2002, 02:37:41 PM »
I\'m currently trying to reload Win98 on a laptop with one drive bay, meaning I can only have a floppy or cdrom at separate times, and its not possible to hot swap them or the machine freezes and for whatever reason the 98 CD isn\'t bootable so I\'m having a problem getting this going. I know its possible to use a startup floppy and format c: /s and then put the cdrom but it would be more beneficial if I could just create another fully functional bootable Win98 CD.I\'ve done this with my 2000 CD\'s and WinME CD\'s as well, I can\'t see why this isn\'t possible with 98 CD\'s. I even tried creating an .img file with WinImage of a win98 startup disk and tried loading that in CDRWIN and creating a bootable 98 CD as per the instructions in the \"How to make a bootable 2000 CD\" on this site, and got some error \"this image was created by WinImage...cannot continue\" and just sits there. So I\'m baffled, any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Try this.
Create a boot floppy with CD drivers loaded.
Edit the autoexec.bat so that it goes to your CD drive, then put setup.exe on the next line.

eg:
D:
Setup.exe
Make an image of this floppy.I generally use WinHex.
Use CDRWIN to make a boot CD.
Browse to the floppy image you created earlier,to use.
Import the files you need to instll Win98 by drag and drop.
You should now be good to go.

While it is possible to make a bootable Win 98 SE, I have done it.

There is one problem, after you setup reboots your machine the first time there is no way to let it continue as the boot sector will catch it first and not let windows setup continue.

The more logical thing to do would be to use diskemu or something and run it like that. It\'s already been done.

In fact look in the huge azz thread named \"Bootable Win2k CD with multi OS\'s\" right there below/above.

Ive read it several time\'s. I believe the thread got totally completed and from what i see it sort of started all over again. It explains how to do it successfully atleast at the minimum 3 times.  you can even copy and paste out of it and have it work.

Maybe someone can post a url to exact instructions....although i believe they would be based out of that thread for everything ive seen on it elsewhere points back to that thread on where they got the info to do it.

To sum up...Old hat, but luckily the info is right here.

Well, this might not be exactly what you\'re looking for, but you can create a regular bootable cd using Nero, or whatever, that boots up to a dos prompt (emulating a floppy boot disk), which has 98 installed, as well as a batch file to run setup.  Now, that would not be a hands free install, since you would have to be there to remove the CD on the first reboot (since it wouldn\'t prompt to boot, would just start in dos automatically).

Now, I don\'t know if it would work (haven\'t tried yet, but I will be doing so in the next few weeks), but you might be able to extract the boot sector from a regular working boot 98CD.  If that prompts you to press any key to continue like the 2k CD does, that would work perfectly.
