actually if you have any possible ideas why my monitor on my laptop would continue to randomly go dark that would be much appreciated too.  Cause thats what has been happening for about a week.  it will just go really dark and i'll have to turn it off and on again in order to see anything on it.  any possible solutions?

It appears that you have a toshiba laptop, what model is it?

when the monitor goes dark, what happens if you close the lid and reopen it?
Does the backlight come back on?

its actually an IMB Thinkpad T43 and it only seems to happen randomly.  if i close the lid and reopen it, just goes to standby and reopens as if nothing is wrong with it.  kind of a mystery

That's not what I meant, the next time that the computer goes dark
Close the lid and then reopen it, does the monitor backlight come back on?

Also, have you checked your settings in Powerstrip and Thinkpads power management

sorry about that... yeah when it goes dark and i shut the lid, once i reopen it the backlight is back on like nothing is wrong and i can just log back into my username.

Did you change any settings in Powerstrip and Thinkpads power management ???

Also, try this
In windows control panel>>Power options
Under Hibernate>>Untick it
Under Advanced>>Power buttons, do you have the option to Do Nothing when you close the lid of the laptop
Is so select it

Under power schemes are you set to go in Standby?
Is so, set to Never

Are you running on Battery or Power cord when this happens?

i had checked both powerstrip and the power management and they looked fine.  i did what you said and so far ive been ok... always happens when im plugged into an outlet too.

it still continues to do it.  it seems like it is more commom when my computer has been on for awhile.  also once it starts to make my screen dark, it just continues to do it once i turn the backlight on again.  do you think maybe it has something to do with my laptops battery (78% of orginal capacity) or even that my laptop is overheating (even though i have a CoolMat for it with two extra fans)?

ah yeah my old laptop did that...it was a advent thing...it had mega CPU problems and if u suddenly jogged the machine the backlight would go out...the only thing you can do is put it in hibernate and turning it back on

It may be a hardware problem, the backlight switch may be malfunctioning

But it may be worth checking to ensure that your fans, intakes and vents are clear
