DISK DRIVE PROBS I/O device error

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about disk drives... When I try and load up a cd, there is a dialogue box appears with the words 'I/O device error.' Does that mean anything to you? When you open MyComputer
Does your CD or DVD drive show up?

NEXT: Can you right click on MyComputer and select MANAGE
Highlight DEVICE MANAGER on the left hand side
On the right
Expand  DVD/CD-rom drives
What is the Exact name of your Drive

Next: Expand on IDE ATA/Atapi controllers
Normally your CD/DVD drive is on the Secondary channel
Double click on Secondary IDE channel
Click ADVANCED SETTINGS
What Transfer mode is your drive running at?

I can't remember a significant event that would've caused the disk drive to malfunction.
One day it just refused to read cds and the 'I/O device error' dialogue box would pop up.

Is the DVD set as Master on the secondary chain?
Or do you have it set as Slave to another CD player?

Have you tried remove the Drive from Device manager>>rebooting and let it redetect it?

Hi Guestolo.
I can't see any 'Slave' or 'Master' settings at all.
I can't see any dialogue boxes where I could change these settings.

All devices are working properly according to the Device Manager.

The IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers are as follows:

Intel® 82801FB/FBM Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 266F    [color=\"#ff0000\"]ENABLED[/color]
Intel® 82801FB/FBM Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 2653
Primary IDE Channel  [color=\"#ff0000\"]ENABLED[/color]
Primary IDE Channel
Secondary IDE Channel  [color=\"#ff0000\"]ENABLED

Are these the correct controllers that are enabled? http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':huh:\' /> I haven't been in this menu tampering with it before so I assume this is the default settings.

I'm curious why I'm seeing double entries, and only 2 are enabled

Can you boot into safe mode
Go back to Device manager
The 2 entries that were not enabled
Intel® 82801FB/FBM Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 2653
Primary IDE Channel

Right click on them and Uninstall them

Do the same for your DVD drive
MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-841S

Reboot back to Normal Windows
XP should Auto detect the DVD and reinstall

Hi Guestolo...

I tried everything that you said. Even tried un-installing the Primary, etc.

Still no joy. The elements were successfully re-installed but still I have no use of my disc drive and still I get the I/O device error dialogue box.

I am running out of ideas and cannot really think of any other strategy to employ here.
