I am stuck in the 90's..Can I say win 98 in here
« on: May 08, 2007, 08:08:50 PM »
http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' /> I know I am banned in most places because I still drive a WIN 98 machine....and if Mr. gates would be so kind to purchase me a newer machine I would gladly move up.... but I can't afford it right now. So is there still hope for me or not.
I can't seemed to get a firewall or virus scan that works with my old computer.

I just tried to uninstall my old AVG that had stopped working...and install avg7.5 ..it works sometimes and then it shuts me down. I have old zone alarm that says it will update me anymore because I am not running 2000 or higher.

and I have a clock problem .... my computer goes back to Jan of 1998 everytime I reboot. That started when it tried to update on the right date this time ...but we had already changed time early this year.

And since windows dont update 98 anymore is there anything we people stuck in the 90's can do to insure that we are safe?
here is my logfile:

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Helper - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - (no file)

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

At a guess, have you ever had to change the CMOS battery on this computer since you have owned it
May be the reason it is not keeping time

Take a look at this link please
Replacing the battery is fairly simple

I got rid of 02 and 03 in hi-jack this..
I changed the cmos battery about two years ago.
I checked out the article and followed directions ...I corrected the time and date...restarted in safe mode and it remained the correct time and date ...restarted again in normal mode and remained the correct time and date.....if I am reading it right according to that it may be in task scheduler or another program.
As for the AVG not working correctly.... since I added the avg 7.5 ..now at boot I get a mesg saying "zlclient has performed an illegal operation...and vsmon has performed and illegal operations ...both programs automatically close.
I can stay up an online about 15 minutes before i get a blue screen and this message:an exception 0E has occurred at 0028:00000007 in VxD---. This was called from 0028:C00519E2 in VxD:
It may be possible to continue normally.--- then everything goes ..i have to shut off the computer to get it back online

i stopped the task scheduler by following the directions in thw window help file.

My computer has been running for about 30 mins with avg7.5 and no zonelabs and has not shut down yet.

I would say that with that first error message you posted
Zone Alarm may be corrupt

I've heard others mention they had minor problems with AVG and ZA
Usually, installing ZA after AVG what the resolution

Take note of what version of ZA your running
If you would like to continue using it, you can grab an older copy from here
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=zalarm
Save the installer to desktop
I believe you need pre 6.5 version
So you may be looking at getting ZoneAlarm 6.1.744.1
I don't use ZA, so I'm not quite sure
But check your present version
Here's more info
http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/cat...=US&lang=en

Uninstall ZA, reboot and reinstall

On a side note: I know you have tried other firewalls before
eg.. Sygate, and you didn't like it

Have you tried the free version of Outpost?
You could try an uninstall of ZA and install this one
http://www.agnitum.com/products/
The free version is the bottom link

I am willing to try a different firewall.

But first I want to tell you what I did. My computer shut-down, all though I had lights on the front...it acted as though it lost power. So I decided to change the cmos clock battery. After I did that everything worked fine. I reset the date. AVG is working great... although Zone Alarm is telling me that I need to upgrade...there doesn't seemed to be any conflicts.(yet).

I do want a new firewall and will try the free version of Outpost.
I am currently running
 ZoneAlarm version:6.1.744.001
TrueVector version:6.1.744.001
Driver version:6.1.744.001

Thanks so much for the help ...will let you know how it goes.
