By default, Microsoft\'s default location for saving files is in the \"My Documents\" folder. Since the \"My Documents\" folder can be renamed, there is clearly not a registry value for this that can be found by a simple word search. Does anyone have any experience on this subject? And would the default save location vary per application, or is there a default for all Microsoft applications?

Pff...get in line pal :-P. im not striking you believe me. Ive tried alot with the registry to make it go away. And yes it is in the registry and it is possible to remove it...but not without a error msg everytime you access a file. It\'s a system folder. I thought i wanted to get ride of it but that was a bad idea. I could however live with have it just not on my desktop so i gave up on getting ride of it. It is possible to get ride of it and get ride of the error msg aswell. But you will probably get a crash.

It is a registry setting however that is why you can rename it. If you can rename it...it\'s mostly a registry setting. Although it is a system folder, it can be renamed, unlike your system pathe c:WINNT or whatever. However ive been told you can trick that aswell but never tried. being that windows just use\'s teh first thing it see\'s it probably is possible. but im not too certain that would work at all...but ive been told that.

On microsoft\'s knowledge base there is a few things about what your trying to do. However none of them are for WINNT ive found. Almost all are win95 and like 1 or 2 on win98.

MORE INFORMATION
The My Documents folder is your own personal folder in which you can store your documents, graphics, and other personal files. When there is more that one person using the computer, Windows creates a My Documents folder for each user on the computer.

By default, the target or actual location of the My Documents folder is C:Documents and Settings user nameMy Documents, where C is the drive in which Windows is installed, and user name is the currently logged-on user. You can change the target if you want My Documents to point to a different folder location.
Change the Default Location of the My Documents Folder
To change the default location of the My Documents folder, follow these steps:
Click Start, and then point to My Documents.
Right-click My Documents, and then click Properties.
Click the Target tab.
In the Target box, do one of the following:
Type the path to the folder location that you want, and then click OK. For example, D:My Stuff.

If the folder does not exist, the Create Message dialog box is displayed. Click Yes to create the folder, and then click OK.

-or-
Click Move, click the folder in which to store your documents, and then click OK twice.

If you need to create a new folder, click Make New Folder. Type a name for the folder, and then click OK twice.
In the Move Documents box, click Yes to move your documents to the new location, or click No to leave your documents in the original location.

You can save documents and pictures everywhere you want  and you also can change the location of those special folders by tweakui  .So it must be in the registry .You can also change the default places of my music ,my pictures ....by tweakui .
Perhaps with a utility that shows changes in the registry you can find out how to do it yourself .

A trick I use at work.  Install on C: drive.  Then move the whole Documents and Settings folder to D: drive.  I then tell the lamen user to save to My Documents always.  If i need to reinstall odds are they don\'t lose much.

Create a new folder to host the profiles.
Copy all existing profiles from the %systemdrive%Documents and Settings folder to the folder you just created. (Note: If you\'re copying from NTFS to NTFS, use the XCOPY command with the /o switch to maintain any ACLs on the files.)
Launch regedit.exe, and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionProfileList.
Double-click ProfilesDirectory.
Enter the path to the new folder, and click OK.
Reboot to take effect.  Once you reboot you can delete the old folder on the system drive.

If you only want to move My Documents or My Pictures go to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell Folders.

Pretty much copied from NTFAQ\'s site.  That\'s where I got the idea first anyway.
Hope this Helps,

Twinkie

I have 4 hardisks , 3 scsi and 1 usb .
First scsi is XP pro NTFS
Second is W2K  NTFS
Third is Ghost images , and other stuff Fat32
On the usb I keep folders like music/mp3 /zip/ winxp/w2k/
In those OS folders I put my updates for the system ,copies of my documents, favorites and the, outlook express folder which I renew whenever I wish to use my ghost image or otherwise every week . I don\'t have to mind user profiles because I am the only user and administrator but your idea about  putting the documents and settings folder elsewhere isn\'t bad at all  in case you can put it on a NTFS  drive or partition for security reasons . Anyway that\'s my idea (for people who want secure systems ) .But anyway what\'s real security these days .

Put the command under [GuiUnattended] in winnt.sif and move the profile where you want already during installation. Here is my line

    ProfilesDir=\"%windir%Documents and Settings\"

I bet you can even change the name of the folder to what you want, for example

ProfilesDir=\"D:Profile\"

yeh you can do that on install but afterwards you have to do one of the others

you might want to try something to trick it...that is if you really dont need it and dont want it
i\'d try to name that directory on install \"System Volume Information\" without the qotues of course, or maybe even \"Recycler

you could even locked the directory with a name with null characters. You could not however use invalid characters or else setup will halt (i already tried that in XP)
