Computer wont restart
« on: June 10, 2007, 02:57:22 PM »
I got an error playing a video game, something like Direct3D error(out of memory) then I hit the power down button and now the computer wont restart. I tried restarting it in safe mode but i get the same error as a regular reboot, it comes up on a blue screen UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME and at the bottom STOP: 0x000000ED and bunch of numbers.

Those bunch of other numbers may be important, can you post the exact error message if possible

Is this an XP machine? Do you have your XP disk?

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

What make/model of computer do you have?

Can you get into safe mode?
Did you install any new hardware or software before this happened?
Think carefully, this is important

When I select Safe Mode it gives me an error reading something like
Multi(0)Disk(0)rdisk
there was a lot more than that but the screen closes quickly.

I have a Dell Dimension E510

I did download a new driver since i thought thats what the problem with my game was.
This was the one: http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/xp/radeonx-xp.html

It was the same error i got before when the game crashed and Id have to manually turn the computer off, but this time it wont restart.

Disconnect all periphials from the computer that is not needed
Eg.. Printers, scanners, flashdrives
Remove any CD/Dvd in the drive

Try booting up again

If no luck, Before windows loads tap the F8 key, in the same menu you see Safe mode
Select Last know Good configuration instead

See if that's any help

I'm trying to check in when I can
Since your operating system didn't come with a CD I take it you only have a Recovery Partition
You will notice that when you boot up
Only problem is some will do a reinstall over the top and save your files and/or others wipe out the system to when you got it originally
Meaning you lose all your info
Do you have anything to be saved in case of full restore?

We have options
Let me know please, and if your willing to go this route

I have used a lot of hard drive space with various stuff and would take a long time to collect it again. Its not important information but it was very timely to gather, I would like to know how to save as much as possible. I guess i have to be willing at this point to wipe out my system.

I would of like to tried and have you boot to the Recovery console
But you would need an XP Cd, same version of Home or Pro your running

Other option for now I can think of
Do you have another computer with burning software that can burn image files
If unsure

I'm assuming you have high speed internet, such as Cable or DSL
Can you download and install
[color=\"#0000FF\"]burnatonce>>bao0995.exe[/color]
Onto a working computer

You can then try a Knoppix cd to boot to your non booting computer
I'm assuming you have high speed internet, you'll need it
Go to the following link
http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html

At the link, you can read the info about knoppix if you want
Click on the DOWNLOAD button
Next page you will want to choose a mirror to download from
Just because a location may be closer to you, it may not always be the fastest connection
I find that the download location from
ftp.kernel.org   [rsync]   [ftp]   [http]   Kernel.Org (California, USA)
is very good speeds if your in North America

You can select it by Clicking  on ftp as eg..
At the new page click on ACCEPT
This will bring you to an Index of what you can download
Scroll down to KNOPPIX_V5.1.1CD-2007-01-04-EN.iso and click on it
Choose SAVE TO DISK and OK
Select the location to download, such as desktop

After download is complete you will want to burn the ISO as is

Fire up Burnatonce, put a blank CD into the drive
In burnatonce, select Setting>>Device Settings, this will show you the options
Ensure the speed of write is correct, you can lower it a bit to ensure a good burn
Afterwards, click on the WRITE button or FILE>>New Image
Navigate to KNOPPIX_V5.1.1CD-2007-01-04-EN.iso
and double click on it to Select it
Then click on the WRITE button again
Let it complete the burn process, after it is successful you are ready to try it in the nonbootable computer

Hopefully you have something like a USB key or another external device to back up to
Or if you have more than one CD/DVD in the non working computer, you can burn backup disks
Enter the bios and change first boot device to your CD, entering bios is different on all machines
You will see Setup on first boot, usually on a Dell it's something like the <F2> key or <Delete> key
Once you have saved the change to boot to CD, ensure to put the Knoppix CD into the drive
Power down, connect your external backup if you have one
Power up the machine, hopefully, if everything goes alright, knoppix should be able to boot the machine and you should have
access to all your files folders on the Windows side
You may have to reboot twice if it doesn't see it the first time

Your Windows drive will look something like "hda1"
You can right click on it and MOUNT it
You may also see the restoration partition, you don't need to enter that, it will be smaller is size

I find that any files>>Folders you want to save, it's best just to Copy>>paste them to Knoppix desktop for easy access
If you need to access the Internet, use Mozilla Firefox browser>>It should have an Icon for it at the bottom of the screen

Do those steps than we can go from there if needed

I have no idea why it would prompt for Word perfect??
Did you get it installed?
I forgot you may be trying this with Windows 98, it should be compatible
I haven't heard the problem your having

If you installed burnatonce, try uninstalling it
Don't you have no burning software that can burn a .ISO file?

If not
Try DeepBurner Free 1.8 from this link>>CLICK HERE

Directions are a bit different with Deepburner
After you download the .iso file from the link I supplied
Fire up DeepBurner and click Create .ISO file

Browse to the ISO from the button beside Image file
Select the file and click Burn

I'm signing off soon and won't be back till tomorrow evening, hope you can figure it out

Im having some trouble figuring this program out.
I open the program and I select Copy CD/DVD/Burn ISO
Then there is 3 options COPY CD, BURN ISO IMAGE, PRINT LABEL
Is there something I should have loaded before this step? Ive never done something like this, I will need some assistance navigating through the steps.

I have installed the free version of DeepBurner on my 98SE machine
Is that the one you downloaded?

I'll assume so
First make sure that you download the .iso image for knoppix from the link I gave you
It is over 700mb in size and you saved it to a convenient location such as desktop

Open Deepburn Pro free edition
Select>>Burn ISO IMAGE>>click NEXT
If the new window that opens is not maximized, maximize the windows by clicking on the top right hand side

Under IMAGE FILE on the right, use the Browse button the square button with the ...
Navigate to KNOPPIX_V5.1.1CD-2007-01-04-EN.iso
Right click on it and choose SELECT
then click BURN ISO on the bottom

Let it finish, it should eject the CD when it's done
Then follow the rest of the instructions to boot from CD

Good work
Save your pics and stuff

Dell normally has instructions posted at it's site
Here's a link, depending on the date that your system was shipped
Follow the appropriate instructions:

At that link first select "Yes, attempts have been made to avoid reinstallation">>Click NEXT
Then since you are already backing up your data
At the next step select "Data has already been lost, or does not need to be backed up">>Click NEXT

This next step is important>>Depending on the date your computer was shipped, you may have alternatives

Let me know once you get back to windows

I got all my files that I need and I tried to follow the technical support at Dell. I did the command to reboot the computer and clear it of everything but I got an error.
It read something like this in a black screen:
Do you wish to reboot your computer now?
Please eject any removable media
<message id="no-reboot-under-windows">
then a bunch of error stuff

then the next time I just got a message in a box reading "system recovery process was not successful"
and to call Dell for assistance

I hope there is something i can still do to fix this problem.

Ensure there is no CD/DVD in your drives and remove any flash drive, printer, etc... that may be connected
Use the minimal connected
If you recently added any new hardware, disconnect it for now

Go back into the bios and set to boot from harddisk first
Save setttings then shutdown the computer

Make sure you followed the Exact instructions they posted

# Disconnect the modem or network cable (if present) from the system before starting the restore process to help prevent potential complications.
# Power the computer on.
# When the Dell screen appears, press and hold the <Ctrl> key on the keyboard, press the <F11> key, then release them both at the same time.

NOTE    NOTE:    Press the keys one time only. If you press them more than once, a keyboard error occurs, and the process has to be initiated again.

The Dell PC Restore by Symantec window appears.
# Click the Restore button or press the <Tab> key to highlight Restore and press the <Enter> key.

A caution message appears, advising that all data will be lost.
# Click the Confirm button or press the <Tab> key to highlight Confirm and press the <Enter> key.

The Progress window appears. Once the process is begun, Dellâ„¢ PC Restore usually takes only 8 to 10 minutes to complete.

When the restore is complete, the message The system recovery process was successful appears.
#
Click the Finish button or press the <Tab> key to highlight Finish and press the <Enter> key.

The computer restarts.
Your software is now installed as it was when you first received your computer.
