help my laptop run even faster windows xp
« on: July 04, 2007, 09:17:59 PM »
Hello. I have a Pentium 4 2.4 GHZ with 192 MB of Ram on a compaq nx9010. Currently I am running windows xp.

I've tried following the instructions of other posts that you gave to other people and found my computer running significantly faster. Before, it was a piece of crap, really slow startup time and everything. Right now I am content with the speed of where its at right now thanks to you guys. However I just wanted to post this just in case I was missing anything or if you guys think there are other areas to improve upon.

thanks in advance,

help my laptop run even faster windows xp
« Reply #1 on: July 04, 2007, 10:15:57 PM »
Hi siLver11
Can i have you disable Ad-Aware's Adwatch so it won't interfere with any fixes please

If you have a newer version of Ad-Aware, please do the following
1. Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray and select "Restore Ad-Watch".
2. At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called "Active" and "Automatic".

Active: Switches Monitoring On or Off without closing
Automatic: Switches Automatic Blocking On or Off

3. Uncheck (red X) both items.

If you have an older version of Ad-Aware, do the following
Open AdAware SE.
Go to AdWatch User Interface.
Go to Tools and Preferences.
At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options Active and Automatic.
Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it.
Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically.
Uncheck both options.

After you have done the above
Do the following
Download FixwareOut from one of the following sites:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
Save it too desktop, we'll need it later

Print the rest of these instructions or save them too a text file on desktop for reference

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{5D60FF48-95BE-4956-B4C6-6BB168A70310} - (no file)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: yvdrgb - yvdrgb.dll (file missing)

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Don't worry if you do receive any error messages with Hijackthis, just carry on please

Double click on FixWareout.exe
Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. If your firewall gives an alert, (because this tool will download an additional file from the internet), please don't let your firewall block it, but allow it instead.
Then you will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads, it will open a textfile. Save that log, because I need it later.

Download this file - Combofix.exe and save it ONLY to your desktop
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Post back all the following please, even if it takes more than one reply to do so
1. Post the log from combofix, also located here>>C:\Combofix.txt
2. Post a fresh hijackthis log
3. Post the report from Fixwareout

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

You have a lot disabled on startup that may be hiding bad files on your computer
Can you do the following

Download haxfix.exe and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on haxfix.exe to install haxfix. (standard installation path is c:\program Files\haxfix)
  • Checkmark "Create a desktop icon"
  • Click "Next"
  • When the installation is completed, make sure that the checkmark "Launch HaxFix" is placed
  • Click "Finish"
A red "dos window" (dos box) will open with this options:
  • 1. Make logfile
  • E. Exit Haxfix
I want to see a logfile please
  • Select option 1. Make logfile by typing 1 and then pressing Enter.
  • Haxfix will start scanning the computer. When it is finished a logfile will open: haxlog.txt
  • Copy the contents of that logfile and paste it into this thread.

Also
Supply an uninstall list from Hijackthis
Open Hijackthis>>Open MISC TOOLS SECTION>>Open UNINSTALL MANAGER
Click the SAVE LIST... button
Save the list to your desktop then copy>>Paste back here the Whole contents

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

help my laptop run even faster windows xp
« Reply #6 on: July 06, 2007, 08:09:18 AM »
Step 1. Haxfix
  • Double click on the fix.bat desktop icon. (or open the folder program files\haxfix and double click on fix.bat.)
  • Close all other open windows since this step requires a reboot.
  • Select option 2. Run auto fix by typing 2 and then pressing Enter.
If an infection is found, you'll get a message to close all other open windows.
  • Close all open windows except the red dos window from haxfix and then press Enter.
  • The computer will reboot.
  • After reboot a logfile (c:\haxfix.txt) will open.
I'll need to see that log later

Step 2. Download and save too your desktop
fsbl.exe
(F-Secure Blacklight)

Double click to run fsbl.exe
    * Accept the user agreement.
    * Click Scan.
    * After the scan finishes, click on Next, then Exit.
Do not rename any files if found by blacklight, I need to see the log

BlackLight will create a log on your desktop with the name "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log".

I'll need to see this log later also

Step 3. You are disabling many unneeded entries with msconfig
We need to clear you of these entries
For now, can you do the following
Go to START>>RUN>>type in msconfig
Under the General tab select NORMAL startup
Apply it and select Close
Restart the computer
Leave everything enabled till we are done here please

Come back here and post all the following back

1. Post the new log from haxfix
2. Post the log from Blacklight
3. Post a fresh hijackthis log

Can you do the following

Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
  • Download the latest version of  Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language  and save it to your desktop (12.56 MB).
DON'T install it yet

Access your Add/remove programs

I would uninstall the following as it normally gets installed unknowingly and not needed
Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
Viewpoint Media Player

In addition
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
on the following
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4

Don't install the new version of Java yet

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{5D60FF48-95BE-4956-B4C6-6BB168A70310} - (no file)

If you normally have Ad-Aware's Adwatch disabled, can you tick this one also
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [AWMON] "C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-aware SE Plus\Ad-Watch.exe"

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot the computer
Go ahead and install the latest version of Java from the installer on desktop

Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log
Again, leave everything enabled on startup till we're thru please
Let me know how things are running

hey guestolo,

I downladed Java Runtime Environment 6u2 because I couldn't find 6u1. I was thinking or hoping it was the updated one.
Secondly, I couldn't remove J2SE runtime environment due to a fatal error. I have no idea what that means or how to remove it.

Thankfully no other problems.. heres the hijack log.. and thanks again for your help guestolo

I downladed Java Runtime Environment 6u2 because I couldn't find 6u1
No that's good, it's the latest version

Try downloading the Windows Installer cleanup utility and save it too desktop>>>msicuu2.exe

Install it and follow the prompts
After it's installed
Go to START>>All Programs>>Windows Install Clean Up
If you see J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4 in the list
Highlight ONLY that entry and click Remove
Then Close the utility

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [antiware] C:\windows\system32\elitewsh32.exe

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot and post one last hijackthis log

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

help my laptop run even faster windows xp
« Reply #12 on: July 07, 2007, 08:31:35 AM »
Looks good

If everything is running better
Please do the following
Go to START>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore
Create a New restore point
Give it a name and click Create
When that's done

Go to START>>RUN>>type the following
cleanmgr
Hit OK
Let if finish calculating

Select the More Options tab
and click Cleanup.. under 'System Restore'
This will clear all later restore points except for the one you just made

Ok the prompts, it may take a few seconds to remove old restore points
Ok again after it's ready and let it finish cleaning

You should give your computer a bit more protection
Install
SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 by JavaCool
    *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates
After updating, select "Protection" on the Left
Then select "Enable all Protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"

We can remove some of the tools from your system, that you don't need anymore
eg...Combofix and Haxfix
Access your add/remove programs and remove Haxfix 4.47
Download this tool:
OTMoveIt by OldTimer:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
    Click the Cleanup! button
A list will be downloaded>>Allow it Internet access if prompted by your Firewall
    Select Yes at the prompt
Wait for the confirmation box to open to reboot the computer
    Select Yes to reboot Now
After reboot you can empty your recycle bin

Hope that helps  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
You can go back and disable what you want with msconfig again
Or better yet
Use a tool such as Codestuff Starter
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/starter.html
This does a much better job>>Keep your AV running!!!

NOTE: You can go back and reenable Adware's Adwatch, I forgot you initially had it enabled
Also, as MadHatter pointed out, more RAM would definitely help this laptop out
You have 256 mb>>64 mb of that shared too video
I would at minimum get another 256mb stick installed, I believe your laptop can support up to 1GB

Also, how old is Norton's AV? Is it right up to date?
