I did it! I deleted the old notepad and scanned again... C

I didn't have a chance to post
I was thinking along those lines as well, good work

Now we have to find out what's causing the reboots

Let's take a chance
Go back to Msconfig

This time only disable the following items under the Startup tab
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SDTray] "C:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor\SDTrayApp.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [PCTAVApp] "C:\Program Files\PC Tools AntiVirus\PCTAV.exe" /MONITORSCAN

Under the Services tab disable Only the following
O23 - Service: PC Tools AntiVirus Engine (PCTAVSvc) - PC Tools Research Pty Ltd - C:\Program Files\PC Tools AntiVirus\PCTAVSvc.exe
O23 - Service: Spyware Doctor Auxiliary Service (sdAuxService) - PC Tools - C:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor\svcntaux.exe
O23 - Service: Spyware Doctor Service (sdCoreService) - PC Tools - C:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor\swdsvc.exe

Apply it and reboot
Any shut down problems?

Did your version of Vista come with a trial version of Nortons Security Suite?

No shut down problems at all... and no, I don't have Nortons Security Suite.

Is it something I should purchase for this computer?

Thanks ~~ C

No, you don't need Nortons Security Suite.
I just seen an entry in your log that indicates you may of had it installed

Can you do the following
supply an uninstall list from Hijackthis
Open Hijackthis>>Open MISC TOOLS SECTION>>Open UNINSTALL MANAGER
Click the SAVE LIST... button
Save the list to your desktop then copy>>Paste back here the Whole contents

That's fine
It might help to track the faulty application

Can we now do the following
Press the Windows + R keystrokes to open the Run command.

Type services.msc and click OK.

Look for this service name
Symantec Lic NetConnect service

double click on it and STOP the service
Then set the startup type to DISABLE
Apply it and then you can exit

After that go back to msconfig
Reenable Everthing, but DO NOT reboot yet

I suggest that you now Uninstall Ad-Aware SE Personal
Reboot the computer afterwards

Post a fresh hijackthis log

Any reboot problems?

Is that the free version of PC Tools AntiVirus 3.1
I only ask because,
I tried PC tools AV at one time and had problems with it on my Windows 2000 machine
Loss of Internet as eg....
If you are comfortable with it, hold onto it, if not I can get you a different free version
Let me know please

EDIT>>Also, how attached are you to the Megauploadtoolbar?
Optionally we can remove it also, or did you uninstall it already?

I'm off to bed myself soon, just waiting to finish a load of laundry  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'<_<\' />

When you come back, can you do the following
Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ycomp/def...//www.yahoo.com
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {83A2F9B1-01A2-4AA5-87D1-45B6B8505E96} - (no file)

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot the computer and post one last hijackthis log
Let me know how things are running

Note: you can go back and reenable Windows Defender's protections if still disabled

I take it that your ok with it then, no need for a different AV?

My computer is running smooth. I've never used the PC tools but it seems fine.  I keep
getting a program trying to access the computer (Vista permissions..!)  It's msnupdate!@#@.exe
I keep denying it, any idea if it's safe?  Any suggestions on safety programs for my computer?

Thanks~~C

Guestolo-
Just wanted to thank you for all your help. I apologize that it took me so long to respond but I
I had to go out of town for a family emergency and have just returned.

My computer is running like a champ!  I will be making a donation ... I don't know what I would
have done without this site and especially your help.

thanks !
