PC is running very slow

My PC is running very very slow., It takes more than 10 minutes to move from screen to screen, to launch the internet and to open files. Can you suggest something or tell me what to do?  I did run spybot and removed some cookies, but this did not seem to help much.  Thank you for you advice in advance.

Please supply an uninstall list from Hijackthis
Open Hijackthis>>Open MISC TOOLS SECTION>>Open UNINSTALL MANAGER
Click the SAVE LIST... button
Save the list to your desktop then copy>>Paste back here the Whole contents

Can you do the following
Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Access your add/remove programs and remove the following
Your Java is way out of date and malware can use it too infect your machine
Uninstall
Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v1.3.1_03

Let it remove but Do Not reboot the computer yet
Instead, remain in add/remove programs and remove
SpywareBot 1.5

Reboot your computer

back in Windows
Download and Install Spybot 1.4 from
HERE

Install with default settings
After installation--Click the UPDATE button on the left
SEARCH FOR UPDATES on the right
Check, and then download all updates (Or right click the results pane and SELECT ALL)
Ensure all updates are successful, a GREEN check will indicate this
If you have an error updating, search for updates again and retry the download until all updates are successfully installed
After update is complete

Click the "Search & Destroy" button on the left
"Check for Problems"---When the Scan is complete
FIX all selected promblems in RED

RESTART the computer to finish any cleaning process

Back in Windows

Download this file - Combofix.exe and save it ONLY to your desktop
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
Post the log that opens please

Also, post a fresh hijackthis log

Install the latest version of Java
Download: CCleaner v1.40.520 - Slim
This will help clear temp files, cookies, etc...
http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds.aspx
Uncheck all options except for Desktop icon when prompted
Run CCleaner
Next: click Options click the Advanced button
Uncheck: "Only delete files in Windows temp folders older than 48 hrs."
NEXT: Click the Cleaner
Then click Run Cleaner (bottom right)
OK the prompt, when finished scanning, just exit the program

Download [color=\"blue\"]OTMoveIt[/color] by OldTimer:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose "Copy"):

I had you uninstall your version of Java, but didn't give instructions for the latest version

Download the latest version of from here Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement[/i]".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language  and save it to your desktop (13.90 MB).
Run the installer from desktop, after it is successfully installed you can delete the installer

I loaded Java and rebooted, but the PC is booting up very slowly and when I launched INternet explorer it is still really slow.  Is there anything else we can do?

That is not nearly enough Ram to be running XP
I would opt to have 512mb minimum, mind you on a test box I have, I do run it with 384mb with no problems
But 128mb is not near enough

And to add to that, Norton AV can be quite a resource hog
What version of Norton's do you have?

We can probably try a different AV and disable some entries on startup
But you would still need to add more RAM to this machine
It is fairly inexpensive also, a good investment

thanks for the recommendation. I have opened it up and saw there is one slot available. Does this mean I can only buy 1  more 128mb of memory ?

You may be able to add more than a 128mb mem stick
That all depends on your motherboard

That is why I asked the following earlier

You don't have the buy the memory from the link I supply
This is just for your information, so you know what to purchase when looking for new memory sticks
There are a few 300S models, you may be able to narrow it down from this link

You can run the Check on your computer from MemoryX site
They auto tool may be able to give you the exact specs.

As mentioned, Norton's can be somewhat of a resource hog
Are you willing to remove it and try a more up to date free version of another AV?

i dont mean for this to be spam or anything but i just wanted to say yea you should have 512Mb ram to run xp but then again i ran xp pro on a pentium 1-266Mhz with like 128 megs of ram do not ask how but it started up smooth but always ran slow because of the ram and processor lol
