Can anyone tell me how to install 2k/xp from DOS??
« on: September 23, 2002, 05:45:33 PM »
In my never ending battle to have the option to install XP to a user defined directory...the only way i know it can be done right now is to install from DOS using winnt.exe /a /t s:e:uengli...etc...

But the problem is i have never installed anything other than win95 from DOS. I once installed a extra copy of win98 in a win98 shell...dos 7.1. but i never have tried to install nt4/nt5/nt5.1 from dos.

any help im just bent on getting what i need done...done

I get one of the two message\'s but the second one more times than the other

1. Fatal error occured.

2. Some msg about not finding a hdd with 381mb to use as a temp drive.

I thought if you install 2k/xp from dos you could use a fat16 or ntfs partition. I deleted the fat16 now and reformatted cleanly to a solid 1 partition 1 hdd of ntfs on primary slave.

still it doesnt see that hdd at all being ntfs.

im just really lost :-P

You must remember that Windows Xp need HD space to copy their files.  The files on the cd are compressed and need to be decompressed to be used.  This is why you need C: drive.

When you boot from a floppy, the only file systems you can access are FAT16 or FAT32 (for a W98 ot WME boot disk).  They cannot read an NTFS partition.  So you drive must have a FAT something format.  I suggest a FAT32.  Use a WIN98 system boot floppy.  you'll have all the tools to do the job.

The easiest way to do it is to created a FAT32 partition for your c drive.  Let's say 10Gb.  Then, format it.  The run the install.  You will have no problems.  During the install, WinXP will ask if you wnat to convert to NTFS. GO ahead if you fell like it.  In the business world, NTFS is the way to go for the security it possesses but at home, FAT32 would be fine.  Windows NT 4.0 and 2K cannot read FAT32, so you had to format it to FAT16, and in the course of installing, it would ask you for a destination drive and he would then partition it and format it in a format he could understand.  In 1996 (just about) when Windows NT4.0 came out, a 800MB drive was big stuff and below the 2GB limit of DOS.

Oh, one last thing. Make sure that floppy boots with smartdrv or something similar.  Otherwise your install will take a good amount of time longer that it could.

You need to reformat the drive Fat16 or Fat32. Dos can not read NTFS, and that is why you are get the error messages. If DOS can't see the partition, you can't install to it.

Maybe this will help, maybe not....

On NT4 you have to use a FAT16 partition under 2GB if installing from DOS.  I have set the unattend to expand the partition and convert to NTFS afterwards but it then expands to fill the disk.  No extra partition available after expanding.  The partition must already exist and make sure you activate it.  That one messes me all the time.

On 2000/XP use FAT32.  Both can read it and the install goes a lot better.  You can set the partition to any size you want and set it to convert to NTFS during the install.

I don't know about the fatal errors but if installing off the CD make sure you load smartdrv.exe in you autoexec file.  Takes days without it.
Hope this Helps,

Twinkie
