Trojan.Win32.Kolweb.n
« on: August 26, 2007, 10:05:42 PM »
I keep getting this trojan popping up - I use Kaspersky AV 6.0 which flags it and prompts me for action...but does not remove it.  It keeps coming back.

I saw a solution in this forum, but it dd not work as the HIghjackthis entries were not on my system.  Thanks in advance!!!

Can you do the following please
Download this file - Combofix.exe and save it ONLY to your desktop
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Post the log from Combofix
Also post a fresh hijackthis log

The requested URL '/sUBs/combofix.exe' was not found on this server.

Seems like it was moved.

I'm on my way to work, in the meantime
It appears that Combofix has been pulled till it's been updated
Can you do the following instead

Download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) to your desktop.
Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open; main.txt, which will be maximized and extra.txt, which will be minimized.

Post the contents of both text files
It may take more than one reply to post both logs

Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
  • Download the latest version of  Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language  and save it to your desktop (13.90 MB).
DON'T install it yet

Close down all browser windows, including this one
Access your add/remove programs and remove older versions of Java
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2

Having more than one active Anti-Virus software running can cause conflicts and system Instabilities
I suggest that you uninstall
Norton AntiVirus 2004 from Add/remove programs also

Reboot your computer afterwards
Back in Windows

===Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box, not including the word "code"
Paste it to the empty Notepad file
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
IMPORTANT>>>Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as fix.reg

Save this file on the desktop
Ensure to copy from REGEDIT4 and down in the code box

Code: [Select]
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"AlcxMonitor"=-

Note:  If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose "Yes".

OTMoveIt will create a log here
C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log
I'll need to see it later please

**Go ahead and install the latest version of Java from the installer on your desktop

Can you also do the following
If you have an older version of Smitfraudfix, delete it
Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).

Can you post back all the following, even if it takes more than one reply

1. Post the log from Smitfraudfix>>By default it is located here>C:\Rapport.txt
2. Post a fresh hijackthis log
3. Post the log from OTMoveIt
4.Go to the following link
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

Copy>>Paste (You may have to use the Ctrl + V keys to paste)
to the open field under Upload a file
(Or you can manually browse to the filename)

The exact line in bold below

C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\ohciusb.sys

Then click the Send File button, wait for the scan to finish
Post back the results of the scan please

Keep me informed how things are running please

Looking better, just a bit more to do

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://us10.hpwis.com/

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://us10.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us10.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://srch-us10.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://srch-us10.hpwis.com/
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://us10.hpwis.com/

O21 - SSODL: xhupNhgH - {6407EDA2-CEAD-4708-8D48-32E47B99F9A3} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ktfnnp.dll (file missing)

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows.  A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

NOTE:running option #2  will remove your Desktop background, you will have to replace it in the Display options found in Control panel.

Back in Normal Windows
Did you attempt to remove Norton's AV?
If so, it didn't get uninstalled properly

Can you do the following please
Download and run the removal tool from Norton's from this link

Follow STEP 3
Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

Afterwards, back in Windows

Post back the following
1. Post a fresh hijackthis log
2. Post the report from Smitfraudfix>> C:\Rapport.txt

remember, Let me know how things are running

Sorry for the delay

Go to START>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore
Select>>Create a New restore point
Give it a name and click Create
Windows will prompt when it was created successfully
When that's done

Go to START>>RUN>>type the following
cleanmgr
Hit OK
Let if finish calculating

Select the More Options tab
and click Cleanup.. under 'System Restore'
This will clear all later restore points except for the one you just made

Ok the prompts, it may take a few seconds to remove old restore points
Ok again after it's ready and let it finish cleaning

I would add a bit more protection to this computer
Install
SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 by JavaCool
    *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates
After updating, select "Protection" on the Left
Then select "Enable all Protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"

Hold onto Spybot
Utilize the Immunization feature in Spybot 1.4
After every update
Click the "Immunize" button>>OK the prompt>>Immunize again at the top green cross

If there are other user profiles on the computer, have them login and
click the "enable all protections" with Spywareblaster under the Protection tab
and Immunize with Spybot after every update

Let's remove some files/folders that we used/produced
Download this tool:
OTMoveIt by OldTimer:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
    Click the Cleanup! button
A list will be downloaded>>Allow it Internet access if prompted by your Firewall
    Select Yes at the prompt
Wait for the confirmation box to open to reboot the computer
    Select Yes to reboot Now
After reboot you can empty your recycle bin

Take note of the following:
Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106)

It appears that you are not fully updated from Windows Updates
Can you manually visit Windows updates
In Internet Explorer click on TOOLS>>Windows updates
Run the Express scan
Install all latest high priority updates
Reboot when prompted, revisit till you have all latest high priorities
This will include Service pack 2

Hope that helps
