Slave and master drives

Hi.
I have XP on my master and want to format my slave which currently has Win98 and a few un-needed proggies.
I want to use the d: (slave) drive just for storage. Can i simply format the D: from the comfort of my master and then store stuff there? ....or do i actually need an O/S on it?
Thanks for any help.

Normally you shouldn\'t encounter any problem , if the hidden files ,boot.ini , ntldr ,and ntdetect stay where they are now ,
