How to remove DRM protection of purchased songs
« on: March 04, 2008, 03:15:31 AM »
We purchase songs from iTunes stores. And all these songs are DRM Protected, you can only listen to them with iTunes or on your iPod. What should I do if I want to listen to the songs on my mp3 player or sansa view or PSP or other portable devices. Can we convert these m4p songs to widely used mp3 format? The answer is yes and there are some ways.

(1) burn the songs to audio CD, then rip the tracks to mp3 songs. However, it's a waste if you have many songs needed to burn.

(2) A program named Noteburner. Noteburner is a virtual CD burner. It works with media player with burning feature such as iTunes, Windows media player, realplayer, winamp and so on. What you need to do is to set Noteburner as default CD burner. In theory, if you can play the songs, you can convert the songs to mp3 with Noteburner. So protected audio files in m4p, wma, m4b formats, can be converted to mp3 with Noteburner.

(3) A program named Notecable. It works as a virtual sound card to record the audio streams in background. It's a good tool too.

(4) Soundtaxi. Similar to the third item.

If you actually purchased downloaded songs... then you shouldn't have a problem buying another piece of software to remove such protection. There in like 70% of the World Wide Web that pirates everything... you shouldn't have the problem with the protection in the first place...

I would just like to point out that all of these would be considered illegal.

Yet, there are some tools which are legal to remove that copy protection and so Audials One is. If you're looking on their website, you'll see that it isn't illegal. http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />

Just because their website says their product is not illegal does not mean it truly isn't. Any program that takes away, converts, or modifies DRM protected media to a point in which the protection no longer exists or becomes hidden is illegal.

It's up to the company you purchase from. If you buy the CD, you have no problem, but if you buy from iTunes, its up to them. If there was some sort of lock that was illegal to remove, I could create a bread company and put the lock on the outside of the packages. Yeah, you wouldn't be able to unlock it to eat it, but it's your choice to purchase the bread from me. If you don't want DRM protection, don't buy from iTunes...

Regarding the legallity, I think it is illegal to remove the DRM protection and then to share the music with other persons. But, if I remove that copy protection for personal use, for transfering the music on other music devices which are used by me, it isn't illegal.

I think your're right, Dobro, it isn't illegal if you remove the DRM for personal use, that's why those tools which are supposed to remove the copy protection are legal.
