desktop Hijacked
« on: March 05, 2008, 11:09:08 PM »
Ok, I did a quick search on Yahoo and seen that several people in this forum seem to be pretty good at fixing this problem.  I'm not great with the really technical stuff so I need some help.  My problem is that my desktop has been hijacked and is now a bunch of cartoon looking characters with internet links.  I've used AVG & Ad Aware but nothing fixes it.  Can someone help me please??

Thx,
Mike

Can I see another couple logs please

See what it uncovers then we'll try a fix
Download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) to your desktop.
Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open; main.txt, which will be maximized and extra.txt, which will be minimized.

Post back just the Whole contents of Main.txt and Extra.txt

Can you do the following

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer as it will interfere with any fixes we try
Open Spybot and click on Mode and check Advanced Mode
Check yes to next window.
Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
Click on Resident icon.
Uncheck Teatimer box.
Close Spybot

After you disabled Teatimer, download ResetTeaTimer.bat
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
to your desktop. (In case you use Firefox, rightclick the link and choose "save as").
Doubleclick ResetTeaTimer.bat and let it run.
This will only take a few seconds.

Access your Add/remove programs and remove the following
winvi (remove only)
If you can't find it in add/remove programs
Try running the next command in bold below
Go to START>>RUN>>Copy>paste the following

"C:\Program Files\winvi\uninst.exe"
Follow the prompts for uninstalling

Once saved to desktop
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click "Remove Selected".
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
I will need to see that log later

I'm a little concerned about the log from Malwarebytes
As no action was taken against the malware found

Can you try the following again please
Open Malwarebytes' Anti-malware
Afterwards:
# Once the program has loaded
Check for updates
then select Perform full scan
# Click Scan.
# When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

If Malware is found...
# Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
# When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
# Please save it to your desktop.

reboot the computer then come back here and post the new log from Malwarebytes please

Ok, I ran it again.  It found 7 infections and I removed them.  Then rebooted.  Here is the logfile from Notepad.  FYI, my desktop is no longer locked like it was.  Should I run these programs every few days or weeks to ensure this doesnt happen again??  Thx,  Mike

Looks good
You can delete everything in the MalwareByte's Antimalware Quarantine section

Go to START>>RUN>>Copy then paste the next command below in bold
Then hit OK

ComboFix /u

This will uninstall combofix and it's components

download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Click the Cleanup! button
A list will be downloaded>>Allow it Internet access if prompted by your Firewall
Don't change anything in this list
  • Select Yes at the prompt
Wait for the confirmation box to open to reboot the computer
Don't mouseclick during the wait as you may cause the tool to stall
  • Select Yes to reboot Now
NOTE: This procedure will also delete OTMoveit.exe from desktop

Go to START>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore
Select>>Create a New restore point
Give it a name, any name,
eg... Brenneka
 and click Create
Windows will prompt when it was created successfully

When that's done

Go to START>>RUN>>type the following
cleanmgr
Hit OK
Let if finish calculating

Select the More Options tab
and click Cleanup.. under 'System Restore'
This will clear all later restore points except for the one you just made

Ok the prompts, it may take a few seconds to remove old restore points
Ok again after it's ready and let it finish cleaning

I suggest that you add SpywareBlaster to your protection software
SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 by JavaCool
    *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates
After updating, select "Protection Status" on the Left
Under 'Quick Tasks' select "Enable all Protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"

You can reenable TeaTimer if it's still disabled
your choice to hold onto MalwareByte's AntiMalware
Either uninstall it from Add and Remove Programs or hold onto it and Check for updates>run a Quick Scan every couple weeks

Take a look at miekiemoes site with other ideas on How to prevent Malware:

I hope that helps  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
