Download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) to your desktop.
Close all applications and windows.

If possible, right click on Norton's icon by the clock and temporarily disable it's Autoprotect feature
In newer versions, I believe the instructions are
double-click the Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect icon.
From the Norton AntiVirus window, click Options, and then click Norton AntiVirus.

From the Norton AntiVirus Options dialog box, under System, Highlight Auto-Protect
Under How to stay protected, click to clear Turn Auto-Protect on (recommended).
Click OK.

From the Norton AntiVirus dialog box, from the Select the duration drop-down menu and click OK.

Could you ensure you open your taskmanager (Right click bottom taskbar and select Task Manager)
open the Processes tab
Select and end process on each instance of iexplore.exe

Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open; main.txt, which will be maximized and extra.txt, which will be minimized.

Post back just the Whole contents of Main.txt and Extra.txt

You didn't post extra.txt
It may be minimized to the taskbar

If not, can you look in this folder for it
C:\Deckard\System Scanner

Can you also navigate to the following folder
C:\WINDOWS\E80F62FF5D3C4A1984099721F2928206.TMP
Are there any files in it?

It doesn't look like anything malicious, but I see high memory useage
Can you do the following

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:
 • Download the latest version of  Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5.
 • From that link scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5".
 • Click the "Download" button to the right.
 • Click the Accept button>>the page will refresh
 • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language (15.18 MB) and save to your desktop.
 • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
 • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
 • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.

- Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    * Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    * J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    * J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2

In your case, remove
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9

 • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
 • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.
Try running IE again, does it load slowly?
If so, open task manager and end process on all instances of iexplore.exe again

Then with IE closed
restart it with no addons
START>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)

Does it load quicker?
Have you just updated Symantec's (Norton's) software?
What version is it?

Post back with a fresh hijackthis log

I just noticed that your running IE6 and not IE7
That's why you couldn't find IE7 with no Add-ons

See how it runs for a bit and post back in a day or so and keep me informed

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

I would definitely look into getting more RAM for the computer
I use to say 512mb minimum in XP

But programs such as Norton Internet Security can use much of that
Upping to at least 1 GB won't hurt
I don't know your exact make/model of computer

but if you need a hand finding exact Ram needed, post back that info

Here's additional info

Can you do the following
Download this file - Combofix.exe and save it ONLY to your desktop

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
By default it will save a copy to C:\Combofix.txt
I'll need to see this log later
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Post the log from Combofix
Reenable Autoprotect in Norton's

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

Can you do the following
Download and save to desktop
FileInfo.zip

Extract the contents so you have FileInfo.vbs on desktop

Double click on FileInfo.vbs to run it
In the first box type an asterik (Shift + 8 keys)>>> *
Then hit OK

Next box, copy and paste the file below

helpctr

Hit OK
When the results text file opens, copy>paste back here the whole contents

Do the same for the next filename

msconfig

NOTE: If you get a prompt from Norton's, allow this script to run, we're just collecting information

In addition to the above
Can you also do the following

Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box, not including the word "code"
Paste it to the empty Notepad file
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as files.bat

Save this file on the desktop
Code: [Select]
dir C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries /a h > files.txt notepad files.txtDouble click on files.bat, a text file should open with info
Copy>>paste back here the contents
Note: A file called files.txt will also be placed on desktop with the same info

there is nothing in that folder.

I have my HP Pavilion PC System Recovery Disks 11 of them, They say Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service pack 2.  I also have windows xp  pro service pack 2 disk from my other computer, probably will not work on this HP.  I also have a disk that is called HP Pavilion PC Supplemental Recovery Disk. This is used when the computer will not start up, it just goes into a loop and never gets to the blue screen.  I have never used the set of 11 disks, But HP sent them to me when I had problem under Warranty. then they found out they sent the wrong disk I was suppose to get the HP Pavilion PC Supplemental Recovery Disk.

Thanks Rob

It may work for what I want to try
Can you insert your copy of xp pro into the CDRom
If it autostarts, just exit it

Try the following
Download and save to desktop
Dial-a-fix-v0.60.0.24.zip

Extract the contents to it's own folder on your desktop

Open the extracted Dial-a-fix-v0.60.0.24 folder
Double click on Dial-a-fix.exe
In the window that opens, look for the TOOLS icon (The Hammer icon at the bottom)
and click on it to open it

In the next window Left click to Highlight Reinstall Help and Support Service
Then click on GO in the bottom left of the screen
Let it finish

When done, don't close the Window yet
Instead, this time highlight Reset Help and Support Service
Then click on GO
Let it finish then click on Close and Exit

Restart your computer
Check and see if Help and msconfig now work

Let me know how things are running also

NOTE:
If you are prompted about wrong XP Service pack 2 CD, just click on OK
At the "Copy files from:"
Type, or copy>paste this location

D:\i386
Then click OK

Hello, I did as you said.  With xp pro Then run Dial-a-fix.  My msconfig is back but no help.  Never had to do anything with Copy files from: D:\i386.  I was never prompted.  I left the xp disk in while I restarted, Had the screen come up with a choice of xp disk or boot normal but it went away to fast to choose.  The computer seems to run good RAM made a big change, I think the only problem is IE, having to double or triple click on the icon to get IE opened up.  I have recieved a few times "A major problem has occurred and the computer must shut down (hard drive Error)" Thinking I may need a new Hard drive or A program to mark the bad sectors as unusable so the computer does'nt hang on a bad sector.  Hope this makes sense.

Thanks Rob

As i mentioned ealier
Try the steps again with Dial-a-fix

do all the steps again with Dial-a-fix
This time DO NOT put your other XP cd into the drive

THIS TIME, when prompted for the CD

At the "Copy files from:"
Type, or copy>paste this location

D:\i386
Then click OK

follow the rest of the instructions, see if Help works afterwards
