WinXP & Networked Printers
« on: November 13, 2002, 12:06:16 PM »
I recently added 3 stations with WinXP Pro to my network.  All the rest are Win2k.  I\'m running a WinNT4.0 SP6a File/Print Server.  When I add the networked printers to the WinXP machines the Printing Preferences where the paper sizes are set don\'t come with the printers.  The Win2K machines all use the settings I\'ve configures at the server.

Any ides on what I need to do to change the WinXP behaviour?

The best way to work around this problem is to install the printer creating a local port. Printers --> Add New Printer --> Local Printer (uncheck p&p detection) -->> Create new port (local port) -->> servernameprintername

Note: You can also use Standard TCP/IP port and use the Printers IP directly.

I hope this helps, cheers.

if u havent already done so.... put your w2k drivers and your xp drivers in a folder on your server.  Then depending on the station youre at, you always have access to both drivers.  After youre connected to the network printer.... access your xp driver and update your xp machine with your xp driver...  That seemed to be my problem about a year ago.   My xp  machines were connecting to a network printer where the printer was connected to a local w2k machine.   so when i went to install the printer it was actually using the 2k drivers off the 2k machine...(which you then access your latest xp drivers on your server and update them on your xp machine)  get my drift? http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
