« Reply #1 on: March 22, 2008, 07:36:21 PM »
Download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) to your desktop.
Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open; main.txt, which will be maximized and extra.txt, which will be minimized.

Post back just the Whole contents of Main.txt and Extra.txt

IE crashes, system crash during virus scan
« Reply #3 on: March 22, 2008, 08:28:31 PM »
Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssqrr - C:\WINDOWS\

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Can you temporarily disable your Antivirus software
If you have an older version of combofix, delete it

Download this file - Combofix.exe and save it ONLY to your desktop

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
By default it will save a copy to C:\Combofix.txt
I'll need to see this log later
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Back in Windows

1. Post the log from ComboFix
2. Post a fresh hijackthis log
3. supply an uninstall list from Hijackthis

Open Hijackthis>>Open MISC TOOLS SECTION>>Open UNINSTALL MANAGER
Click the SAVE LIST... button
Save the list to your desktop then copy>>Paste back here the Whole contents

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

IE crashes, system crash during virus scan
« Reply #5 on: March 22, 2008, 10:55:22 PM »
Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:
 • Download the latest version of  Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5.
 • From that link scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5".
 • Click the "Download" button to the right.
 • Click the Accept button>>the page will refresh
 • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language (15.18 MB) and save to your desktop.
 • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
 • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
 • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.

- Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    * Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    * J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    * J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
In your case, remove
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Don't reboot the computer yet, instead, remain in add/remove and also uninstall
Viewpoint Media Player

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaul...rch/search.html

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaul...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

==Open notepad
Copy ALL the BLUE text below and Paste to notepad
Don't use anything else than notepad or the script will not work

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\lvuvc.hs
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\rrqss.bak2
Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\SunJavaUpdateSched]

Save this as txtfile on your desktop
CFScript

Disable your AntiVirus software temporarily so as it won't interfere with the next fix

Drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Combofix will start>>Follow the prompts
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

When finished, it shall produce a log for you  with the  name C:\ComboFix.txt..
I'll need to see that log again later

Back in Windows

From your desktop double-click on jre-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version of Sun Java

Download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune.
Save it to your desktop
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
      Under Main choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser

Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

========================================

Again, temporarily disable your AntiVirus software
Run 'BitDefender Online Scanner' using Internet Explorer:
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
At the 'END USER SOFTWARE LICENSE AGREEMENT' select 'I agree'.
You'll be prompted to install the activex control, please do so.
Once installed, disable your current antivirus program if one is installed, then click the 'Click here to scan' button.
The virus signatures will then load.
Once loaded the scan will start.
The scan will take quite some time so please be patient.
Once the scan has finished select the 'Detected Problems' tab.
Click on 'Click here to export scan'.
Save the file as an HTML file to your desktop.
Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser.
Go to 'Edit'/'Select All' then copy

Post back the following to the forum

1. Post the report from the BitDender scan
2. Post the log from combofix>>C:\ComboFix.txt
3. Run a fresh scan>save logfile with Hijackthis and post it too

Keep me informed how things are running please
Ensure to reenable your Antivirus software

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Sounds like harddrive failing, I would be sure to backup important files/folders to be on the safe side
Which test did you try?

Try the following, let me know if it picks up on errors
We should try an alternate harddisk utility too

Open MyComputer>>right click on your drive letter
and then select Properties
Open the TOOLS tab>>Under Error checking
Put a tick in both "Automatically fix file system errors"
and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors"

Then click START
You should get a prompt a reboot of the computer is required
Do so
Let me know how you make out

Stage 4 can take some time depending on the size of the drive
You have a 145 gb, give it up to another hour to finish, see what percent your at then

Previously I mentioned you should back up important files/folders

It's not a good sign that chkdsk did not finish
We could try running it from the recovery console and see if it will complete

As far as IE7
Can we run one more scanner
Please download Rootkit Revealer (link is at the very bottom of the page)

    * Unzip it to your desktop.
    * Open the rootkitrevealer folder and double-click rootkitrevealer.exe
    * Click the Scan button (bottom right)
    * When it's done, go up to File > Save. Choose to save it to your desktop.
    * Open rootkitrevealer.txt on your desktop and copy the entire contents and paste them here.

** NOTE Before performing a scan it is recommended to do the following.
1. Physically unplug the cable from the PC to the internet connection.
2. Close down All Scheduling/Updating + Running Background tasks etc.
3. Launch and run the program.
4. While it is scanning DO NOT use your computer at ALL until the scan has been completed.
5. Save your Log File, and then Enable those things you closed down, or Reboot, and then Reconnect to the Internet.

Also: Can you let me know if IE7 crashes with no addons
Close IE
Then reopen it from START>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>IE7 with no addons
