my computer is infected...
« on: April 06, 2008, 09:59:18 PM »
Hi, I got infected with win32.p2p-worm.alcan.a when I downloaded something from limewire. Ad-aware found this worm, and after i removed it, it continued to be found every time i performed a scan.

In my C:\Documents and settings\michelle(otherwise "owner")\shared folder, thousands of zip files appear. I just got done deleting over 18,000. They appear to be program zip files. I think this is linked to the virus.

I've tried finding a solution to getting rid of this virus but I find that this requires some expertise. I'd appreciate any help anyone could offer. Thanks.

Can you do the following please

disable SpybotSD TeaTimer, as it may hinder the removal of the infection. You can enable it after you're clean.
To disable SpybotSD TeaTimer:

Open Spybot and click on Mode and check Advanced Mode
Check yes to next window.
Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
Click on Resident icon.
Uncheck Teatimer box.
Close Spybot

After you disabled Teatimer, download ResetTeaTimer.bat
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
to your desktop. (In case you use Firefox, rightclick the link and choose "save as").
Doubleclick ResetTeaTimer.bat and let it run.
Follow the prompts
When done exit out please

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [outlook] C:\Program Files\outlook\outlook.exe /auto

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Afterwards:
Download this file - Combofix.exe and save it ONLY to your desktop

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
By default it will save a copy to C:\Combofix.txt
I'll need to see this log later
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Post that log from ComboFix
Also, run a fresh scan>>save logfile with Hijackthis and post it too

my computer is infected...
« Reply #5 on: April 08, 2008, 03:24:41 PM »
So when I ran combofix my icons and task bar disappeared.  When it was done with the scan, the log popped up, but my icons and taskbar never came back, so I had to force my computer to shutdown.  Combofix said that my clock settings were changed, but that after the scan its normal settings would be reset... but it hasn't reset.  Right now it's military time, and I don't see an option to make it go back to normal time.  I'm sure there's probably some simple solution to this, and it's probably right under my nose, but I don't know how to change it back.

Did you leave Spybot's Teatimer enabled during the fixes?
I would hope you wouldn't as it can interfere

I see this entry in your combofix log
G:\Autorun.exe

It may be related to a Flash drive infection
Can you do me a favor
If you have a USB Flash drive or similiar
whatever it is that represents your G: drive
Can you insert to your computer, but HOLD DOWN the SHIFT key on your keyboard when inserting so it Won't Autostart
Afterwards,
go to this link

http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html
Copy and paste the following bold line to the space next to  'Upload a File'

G:\Autorun.exe
Then use the SEND FILE button
Let it finish scanning
Could you post back the results this scan back here please

When I did the scans I didn't have anything in my USB ports besides maybe my printer.  After you mentioned the G drive
I checked "my computer" and there was no G drive.  But I hooked up my external harddrive to do what you said and
this was the result of the scan:

0 bytes size received / Se ha recibido un archivo vacio

I also tried putting in my thumb drive and the result was the same.

I did go into spybot and unchecked teatimer before I ran combofix.  When my computer restarted, I saw that the teatimer process was running,
and opened spybot, and it was checked again.  So I don't know what the deal is with that.

Please disable TeaTimer once again, then download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Right-Click on OTMoveit2.exe on desktop and select Run As Administrator
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard in BLUE by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
    ==============================================================================
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\rar.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\BTCPatcher.exe
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer\run\\System Patcher

    ==============================================================================
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List Of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.

  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

OTMoveIt would of created a log at this location
C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log
I'll need to see it later

I see no installed AntiVirus on this computer
I suggest that you install one of these free versions

ONLY INSTALL ONE
AVG 7 by Grisoft
OR
Avast Home Edition by ALWIL
OR
Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic

Each has a Free version
Once installed, ensure it is updated and run a complete scan of your system
Including your external drives

When done, reboot the computer
Leave your new AntiVirus installed
Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log and let me know how things are running please
Also post the log from OTMoveit

Edit>>I modified the instructions with OTMoveIt a bit, if you have already started, not to worry, we'll deal with the changes later

Here are the results of OTMoveit:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\rar.exe moved successfully.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\BTCPatcher.exe moved successfully.
< HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer\run\\System Patcher >
Registry value HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer\run\\System Patcher deleted successfully.

OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer - Version 1.0.4.1 log created on 04082008_220414

I'm downloading Avast Home edition right now.  As soon as I get to run it and do a scan I'll send you a fresh hijackthis log.

Thanks so much for all your help.

I don't know why but teatimer starts all by itself, and even though I uncheck it when I go back to it after my computer has restarted, it is rechecked...

« Reply #14 on: April 10, 2008, 09:08:13 PM »
Okay, so I open spybot.  It's in the advanced mode.  And I click on "tools" then click "resident."  I uncheck "resident teatimer" and then I close spybot.  So if I open it again, and click tools, then resident, teatimer will still be unchecked.  It becomes checked again when my computer has been restarted.

Should I just uninstall spybot?

I don't know what this is, but it pops up for a split second every couple minutes.  I've only noticed it for the past couple days.  I was hoping you might know what it is.

I'm not sure what that Icon in the Start bar is related too

when it shows in the task bar, can you right click on it and select ABOUT
Will it give information

If not, can you open Task Manager and see what runs every couple of minutes?
I am going to suspect smARTupdate
In add/remove programs, but that's only a suspicion

Since this has happened since the last few days, can  you remember ANY software you updated or installed?

I do have smartupdate actually.  I'm unable to click on it because it comes and goes way too fast, and I can't catch it in task manager.  It's literally there for just a split second.

The only things I've installed are the things you've told me to install.

So how was the hijackthis uninstall list?

Should I do anything else with the infections avast found?

And what about teatimer?  Should I uninstall spybot?

Can you do the following
Not sure why TeaTimer won't disable
Can you close it down again, then uninstall it fro Add/remove programs

Reboot the computer

Back in windows, uninstall smartupdate
Reboot the computer, does the icon show by the clock?
