That's a very argumentative question

My preferences
If your after a paid AntiVirus software
NOD32 or Kaspersky, you can't go wrong with

Free, My new favorite>>Avira AntiVir or Avast free version

You can't go wrong with Avira, it's got a great record

Firewall protection, that's a toss up
I like both Comodo or Online-Armor, or even the free version of ZoneAlarm
All the above have a free version
TAKE NOTE: Both Comodo and Zone Alarm now include a toolbar when installing
I suggest that you untick that option when installing

Either way, ONLY Include one AntiVirus software and one Software Firewall in your protections
More recommendations at this link
http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=15894

The link Only includes software that has free software
The pro versions of all the free ones include extra benefits
Nothing wrong with paying for any of them, I'm sure they would appreciate the subscription

I would "SUGGEST" BitDefender
http://www.bitdefender.com/site/Downloads/   <<<< subscription

http://www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-14-en--...ee-Edition.html    <<<<<< FREE Edition

#1 Antivirus in 2008   second goes to Kaspersky

CHECK IT OUT >>>>>>>   http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

NOTE:  "EVERYTHING" can be FREE even for "SUPPOSELY paid subcription software .... IMO
