Task Manager not working
« on: June 20, 2008, 03:19:09 AM »
I ran a Glary Utilities program that was free it says it clean my registry yeah it messed alot of "stuff up" of course i entered a system restore point before i did anything then problems started happening after that http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' /> ....system32 missing reinstalling MyDVDplus HP software or what ever the program name was.  After the system started acting all wierd and going insane i said OK system restore........ 10 minutes later your restore was sucessful...... well it says it was now i reinstalled MyDVDplus HP software well at least now its not trying to install a program in the middle of me trying to do something.  I was looking at the C:\Program Files\Uniblue\RegistryBooster 2\RegistryBooster.exe  I looked at the website it looks like a good piece of software I am pretty computer literate but when it comes to modifying the registry I was always told DONT MESS WITH IT!!! well something is totally wrong here and i just want to http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' /> get it fixed i dont know what more to say it seems currently that WindowsXP is doing fine but just the fact in knowing that Uniblue says 358 more errors remaining just is not cool with me.

Task Manager not working
« Reply #1 on: June 20, 2008, 07:25:29 AM »
I'm not a big believer in registry cleaners, but many ppls like to use them
I occassionally might run the one built into CCleaner, but that's about it
Always make a backup!

Can we look at a couple other logs please
Download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) to your desktop.
Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open; main.txt, which will be maximized and extra.txt, which will be minimized.

Post back just the Whole contents of Main.txt and Extra.txt

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

Task Manager not working
« Reply #3 on: June 20, 2008, 02:50:36 PM »
There is a way around making more than one set of Recovery disks, but it doesn't always work
You would have to Google it
But it appears you have the HP Recovery partition installed on this computer, so you may not need any disks

Do yourself a favor, for now, quit using those Registry cleaners, it appears to be doing more harm than good

Let's try some cleanup
go to Start >> Run and type or copy/paste the following in the run box:

"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft

 Then press Enter

    * Click on the Scan button.
    * Select everything it is displaying there
    * Click the Fix button.
    * Then rescan with DAFT again - it should say now that "All associations are OK"
    * Close DAFT if you receive that message. This means that it is fixed now.

Afterwards: Close down all browser windows
Access your Add and Remove Programs and uninstall all the following
Don't reboot till the last is removed

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Viewpoint Media Player

Reboot the computer

Back in Windows
Updating Java:
 • Download the latest version of  Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
 • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6".
 • Click the "Download" button to the right.
 • In the Window that opens, select Windows, , check the "agree" box and click Continue.
 • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
 • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.
Come back here, post a fresh hijackthis log
Let me know exactly what problems your still having

Task Manager not working
« Reply #5 on: June 20, 2008, 03:28:19 PM »
Ensure you have dss.exe directly on your desktop

Then instead of typing, COPY AND PASTE all the below in Blue to the run field
Ensure to include the beginning quote

"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft

See if that helps

You stated "There is a way around making more than one set of Recovery disks, but it doesn't always work
You would have to Google it "...... HELP?

Now I know how Microsoft and its antipiracy policy works ..... i have a old copy of the serial code of Windows XP Upgrade from when i had WindowsME OMG i hated that program but the disk got damaged /sigh well crap

Im not a hacker I have purchased Windows XP and Windows ME in the past moving across the country seems to be where the disks either get damaged or broken (moving companies) but if i have to get a Torrent copy of them .... and i have the proper serial codes in which i purchased them i dont see where i would be in the wrong i mean why should i have to go out and make Bill Gates richer?  I have the reciepts also for when i purchased them.  So if you are knowledgeable on how or where to get a Torrent of Windows XP\Windows 98 full version i have the serial codes.  Or if you cant help..... maybe a place online that sells Windows XP full Verison ?  I also know if you buy a periferial (spelling) example mouse, keyboard etc etc most places will give you a discount on the full version of Windows XP ....or so i heard or did they stop that ?  Anyways ...... if i have to buy the full version ill just back up all my pictures and music and Microsoft Office Documents.  And when i install Windows xp full version them on this computer do i have to do anything special if i have to wipe the drive then so be it this is my LAST resort of course.  Well this is where i stand right now any input that you can give me that would be awsome..... Thanks again If you want to personal email me guestolo its hkmp5 underscore 40caliber @ yahoo dot com dont send any file attachments you can send me website links and instructions on how to do the processes to get my issue fixed or where to download certain software.

Task Manager not working
« Reply #7 on: June 21, 2008, 12:16:15 PM »
HP wants you to make only one set of disks
Also, you don't need the disks as the Recovery partition is installed on this computer

But can you do the following

Can you Confirm to me that when you ran this

"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft
And ran the scan.. "All associations are Okay"

In addition, can you do the following
Download and save to desktop
Dial-a-fix-v0.60.0.24.zip
by djlizard
Extract the contents to it's own folder on desktop
If that direct link doesn't work, you can download it from here also
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4899.html

Open the extracted Dial-a-fix folder and double click on Dial-a-fix.exe
In the main Window put a tick in
Empty Temp Folders

Under Registration center
Tick all the boxes

Then click on GO
Let this complete, when done click on Exit

Reboot the computer

Come back and let me know if you still have problems with control panel
Let me know about the running of daft>>All associations okay?

Is Task manager working?
If not, can you try the following
Download and save xp_emegencyutil.exe from this link
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_emerutils.htm
Double click to run xp_emegencyutil.exe and click on "Create Copies" then Exit

Navigate to C:\EmergencyUtils, open it and double click on "Copy of TaskMgr.exe"
Does task manager open?

Try this

Start -> Run -> sfc /scannow

Let it run in the sys tray because it will take a while to finish.
