Plese help... I have search the internet abou this but I can not keep the desktop up long enough to do anything. It is a different computer than I am using right now.
I can not do anything on the troubled computer... no way to run a log, no way to load a virus killer..but here is what is going on.
the computer is win xp home version.
It will boot up, and I can see the desktop for 2 seconds then it is just a blue screen. then its the desktop and then it is just a blue screen. This happens about 10 times before it stops at a blue screen.
I have read about the smitfraud virus and it does look like that. So I downloaded "smitfraudfix.exe" but I can not load it onto the troubled computer. because I can not get the desktop to stay put. I can't use any other command except ctrl-alt-delete.
I tried to boot into safe mode and safe mode does the same thing, it throws up the screen and then nothing...at this point I can see the words safe mode in both side of the lower part of the screen and the safe maode version is scrambled at the top of the screen.

NOW on occassion it is possible to start a program in the 2 seconds that my screen is up. I have manage to run nero and copy some of the most precious files to cd. I have also done several scans with adware and spybot S&D. Spybot did find the smitfraud-core. but could not get rid of it.

I have tried about 30 times to load this "smitfraudfix.exe" from the cd and it will not do a thing.. My control panel will not stay up...it seems that anything windows will not work...however other programs will if I can grab them in the 1 to 2 second time frame before the blue screen appears again.

I will try to burn a copy of the HJthis log.... but it will take me an hour or so...as I have to turn the computer off and on several times before I catch the program.
In the meantime any help would be appreciated.

« Reply #1 on: July 17, 2008, 06:01:22 PM »
I need to know if you can do the following, either in Safe mode or in normal mode
Download a copy of ComboFix from > HERE <

Save it and burn it to Cdrw if available, then transfer it over the infected computers
Desktop, Do not run it from the CD

If you do happen to have an older version of ComboFix, don't use it, you need an updated copy

Please disable SpySweeper, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.

To disable SpySweeper:

Open it, click > Options over to the left then > click the Program tab > Uncheck "Start Spy Sweeper at Windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields"
  • Click the "Internet Explorer" tab and and uncheck all there.
  • Click the "Windows System" tab and uncheck all there.
  • Click the "Host File" tab and uncheck all there.
  • Click the "Startup Programs" tab and uncheck "Startup Items Shield".

Remember after your system is clean to re-enable Spy Sweeper.
Double click on ComboFix.exe to run it
Follow the prompts
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
Normally this fix takes 10 to 30 minutes

When finished, it shall produce a log for you  with the  name C:\ComboFix.txt..
If the system is rebooted, the log will be produced after a few minutes after rebooting

After the log opens
Post the log from ComboFix

Can you still do the following

==Open notepad
Click START>>RUN>>type in notepad
Hit OK
Copy ALL the BLUE text below and Paste to notepad
Don't use anything else than notepad or the script will not work

KillAll::
Driver::

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mlJDUlLC.dll
C:\WINDOWS\wininit.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ljjHyApq.dll
Folder::
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\vATHeZ4G

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Services\cbchb4c0]

Save this as txtfile on your desktop
CFScript

Drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Combofix will start>>Follow the prompts
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

When finished, it shall produce a log for you again with the same name C:\ComboFix.txt..

I'll need to see it later
Afterwards:
download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here
Save the installer to desktop

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.

  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
        * When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)

  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Along with the log from Malwarebytes AntiMalware

Post back the log from ComboFix>>C:\ComboFix.txt

In addition to the above 2 logs
Can you do the following please
Download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) to your desktop.
Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open; main.txt, which will be maximized and extra.txt, which will be minimized.

Post back the Whole contents of Main.txt and Extra.txt

Note: It will probably take more than one reply to post back all the info above
Do so if required please

Thanks for all the logs
Can you just let me know the following and then we'll do some final tidying up

Did you at one time have
Norton Internet Security installed?
It looks like at one time it was installed, but no longer is on your system

In addition, can you Uninstall your copy of Hijackthis from add and remove programs, I would like to see a log from the most recent version

Download Hijackthis Installer from HERE
For an alternate download location, you can try HERE
SAVE it to your desktop
Double click on HJTInstall.exe to run it
Choose Install

Hijackthis v2.0.2 will open

Under Main Menu, Select
Do a system scan and save a Log file
A log will open in Notepad
Copy and Paste the Whole log back here to the forum

smitfruad or something is keeping me from getting to my desktop
« Reply #9 on: July 17, 2008, 11:33:12 PM »
Let's do some final cleanup
And we shoud get more protection on this computer and update Java
Try and do all the following please

go to Start >> Run and  copy/paste the following in Red to the run box:
"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft
 Then press Enter

    * Click on the Scan button.
    * Select everything it is displaying there
    * Click the Fix button.
    * Then rescan with DAFT again - it should say now that "All associations are OK"
    * Close DAFT if you receive that message. This means that it is fixed now.

===Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box, not including the word "code"
Paste it to the empty Notepad file
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
IMPORTANT>>>Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as fix.reg

Save this file on the desktop
Ensure to copy from REGEDIT4 and down in the code box

Code: [Select]
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
"AntiVirusDisableNotify"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecFirewall]
"DisableMonitoring"=-
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\SunJavaUpdateSched]

Double click on fix.reg and allow to add/merge to the registry at the prompt

Go to START>>RUN>>Copy and paste the next entry in Blue

ComboFix /u

download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.

Optionally, you can hold onto Malwarebytes Antimalware
Or uninstall it from Add and remove programs
If you choose to hold onto it
Open the program, Open the Quarantine tab and "Delete All"
Check for updates occasionally and run a quick scan

I suggest that you add the next program for added security

*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates
After updating, select "Protection Status" on the Left
Then select "Enable all Protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"
or again, click on Protection Startus>>enable all protection

Since it appears that Norton's wasn't completely removed
Can you do the following
Go to the following link
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...&view=docid

Norton Removal tool
Don't run it yet

Instead, Close down all browser windows
Access your Add and Remove programs and remove the following
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 3
Viewpoint Media Player

Don't reboot yet, even if prompted, instead
Double click on Norton Removal tool and follow the prompts
Reboot after it is done, or it may reboot the computer for you

Back in Windows
Download and save to your Desktop
> Avira AntiVir <

Install Avira AntiVir from desktop
Ensure that you have it check for Updates
The first time it updates may take awhile, but allow it time

NOTE: Avira will display a single big Ad on your computer
Don't be alarmed, just click OK at the bottom of the Ad to close it

A scan of your System should then start
If a scan does not start after updating, double click on the Avira icon by the clock (the red/white umbrella)
and select "Scan system now"

Quarantine or delete everything it finds
When the scan is finished
Reboot the computer

Back in Windows
Updating Java:

« Reply #10 on: July 18, 2008, 12:24:11 AM »
guestolo,
igot as far as otmoveit installed on the destop ....
but I am not connected to the internet with that computer...and I get the message "unable to connect to the internet, cleanup list download failed"
so far I have done everything with my laptop., by copying to cd's and transferring.
This (the one that we are repairing) computer is setup for a different internet connection than i use at home, we use this one at my daughter house, just down the road.

will it be possible to wait for these last steps until I get it connected back to the internet tomorrow evening?

Just saw your post, I was just off to bed
Shouldn't do no harm waiting till tomorrow, but make sure she does those last steps

Leave Avira installed, it's actually a very good free AntiVirus software

Hope to hear back from you by Monday and tell me everything is running great  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />

Edit>>Since you mentioned you weren't online with this laptop
I went back and checked your version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
Version is correct, but data base was a bit outdated
If you do still have it installed
Wouldn't hurt to open it after your back online and check for updates, run a Quick Scan
and remove anything found
If you already removed it, just skip this step

Guestolo,
Will I still need spysweeper after I add AVIRA? My Spysweeper is out of date, and we had planned to purchase the updates but if I do not need it i will not do that.

I just got back into town
As I mentioned, after you did all the last steps, can you let me know how everythings running please

In addition, No, you don't have to repurchase SpySweeper if you don't want it, that's your option
Avira is AntiVirus software and your version of SpySweeper is Spyware protection software
2 different programs all together

If you don't want to repurchase SpySweeper, you should uninstall it then reboot your computer

Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log, keep me informed how things are running
We can find an alternative spyware protection program
