Hello,

I have an HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GCA-4080N,CD/DVD unit in my laptop and it was working fine until my hard drive crashed and I had windows reinstalled. CD functionallity is working fine. However, DVD read/write is only working if I used a DVD which already contains some data. i.e., if I insert any empty DVD+/-RW it is not recognised.

can someone help?

Need more info
Can you do the following
Download [color=\"#008000\"]Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe)[/color] to your desktop.
Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open; main.txt, which will be maximized and extra.txt, which will be minimized.

Post back the Whole contents of Main.txt and Extra.txt

NOTE: This is not malware related, I just want more info
If prompted by dss.exe to download HijackThis, allow it

Can you do the following
Access your Device manager
Right click on MyComputer>>Select Properties>>select Hardware tab>>select
Device Manager

Expand CD/DVD Roms
Are all drives recognized, can you right click on each drive and select properties
Are all drives working properly, any error codes?

Are all drives recognized in MyComputer?
If all, or any are recognized in MyComputer
Can you right click on your drive(s)
Select Properties>>Recording tab
Ensure there is a check in "Enable CD Recording on this drive"

What software do you use to Burn with?

In addition to the above
==Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box, not including the word "code"
Paste it to the empty Notepad file
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
IMPORTANT>>>Change the Save as Type to All Files.

when I go to Device Manager and expand CD/DVD ROMs I only see the following drive: " HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GCA-4080N". No errors and working properly.

When I go to properties, there is not a recording tab where I could enable CD Recording on this drive. There is only options on how to play but not about recording.

Software I use to burn CD/DVD : Nero version 6

Can you try the following, go back to Device Manager
Expand CD/DVD rom and right click on your drive
Choose to Uninstall it, follow the prompts
Reboot the computer afterwards

With regards to CDRW, the problem is that I have none. I only have CDR and this is working fine.
With respect to DVD+RW, I am using exactly the same vendor/type I have been using before the disk crashed. As I mentioned, no problem with DVD already recorded. However, if they are empty (both -Rw and +Rw) are not even detected by the computer.

I have tried the fix.reg with no success.

And also, still no Recording tab shown.

I am wondering if it is just that I need the right driver?

Did you visit Siemens/Fujitsu and download latest chipset and other drivers recommended for you machine?
Edit: On another note, sometimes a reinstall is not always the best option
Did you reinstall over the top, or did you clean install the system?

It may help to update to Service Pack 3 for Windows XP also

I have tried everything: downloading latest drivers, updating to service pack 3, but no joy.
in terms of the reinstallation, the problem is that this was done by another person, not me. I think they did a new installation.

To make things more strange, one of the many times i tried inserted a blank dvd, it was actually detected by the laptop as such, and then I could write it with data. once i removed it, and tried with another blank dvd, same issue as always, not being recognised ... should I assume this means a hw problem?

I really am not sure what is happening with your Drive

A clean install may help, this is where you backup all important files, etc
Then actually format and install the drive

Reload all updated drivers and Windows updates
Would you like to try that route
Do you have the XP install (Recovery) CD?
