Wallpaper settings greyed out
« on: August 23, 2008, 04:49:58 AM »
Hi,

For some reason I can't select between wallpapers in the screen settings buttons are greyed out (bladeren/select - position - scrollbar)
I can set a picture as background image, but i have 2 monitors so i would like to have my wallpapers (2720x900 pix) spread over the 2 screens.
Without the setting of position, i can't do that, it displays the same wallpaper on each screen.

Can you do the following please, I want to ensure it's not malware related
Download Hijackthis Installer from HERE
For an alternate download location, you can try HERE
SAVE it to your desktop
Double click on HJTInstall.exe to run it
Choose Install

Hijackthis v2.0.2 will open

Under Main Menu, Select
Do a system scan and save a Log file
A log will open in Notepad
Copy and Paste the Whole log back here to the forum----It is all important!

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Can I see one more log please

Download and save to your Desktop
 OTScanIt
Double-click on it's icon.
A folder named OTScanIt will be created on your desktop and files will automatically be extracted to it.

Open the OTScanIt folder and double-click OTScanIt to start the program.

    * Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
    * When the scan is complete Notepad will open containing the results of the scan.

Post the whole contents of that log please

Again, sorry for the delay, there should be an easy registry fix for this, but I also see another setting that was changed
Can we run a tool and see if anything else is uncovered

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
We'll need this later

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
In safe mode

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd

Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't
Reboot back to Normal Windows
I'll need to see the log it generates later, by default it is located at
C:\rapport.txt
============================================

Back in Normal Windows

 Post the report from Smitfraudfix>>C:\Rapport.txt
Also let me know if you can now change your desktop background settings

Hi here is the report...
I had good hopes, but unfortunatlly the keys are still greyed out. http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'<_<\' />
It did the cleaning , but wininet.dll was not checked if infected, and therfore not asked to delete Y or N.

Hi here is the report...
I had good hopes, but unfortunatlly the keys are still greyed out.

That's ok, it could be that Spyware Doctor interfered with some of the changes

Can you do the following to ensure it never interfered
To deactivate Spyware Doctor's OnGuard Tools

1. From within Spyware Doctor, click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
2. Uncheck "Activate OnGuard".

Then, in Normal Windows

Reboot the computer normally

back in Windows
download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here
Save the installer to desktop

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.

  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
        * When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)

  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediately.

That uncovered some more bad guys

Can you run one more tool please
Download this file - Combofix.exe and save it ONLY to your desktop

Temporarily disable Avast AV protections so it won't interfere with it running
Also, ensure Spyware Doctor's Protections are disabled
To disable AVAST, right click the a icon by the clock and select
"Stop On Access Protections"
Yes to the Prompt

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
By default it will save a copy to C:\Combofix.txt
ComboFix may need to reboot your computer
the log will produce after a few minutes after startup

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Post that log from ComboFix please

1. Can I please see a fresh hijackthis log

2. In addition, can you do the following
==Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box, not including the word "code"
Paste it to the empty Notepad file
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
IMPORTANT>>>Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as export.bat

Save this file on the desktop

Code: [Select]
regedit /e export.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies"
export.txt

Double click on export.bat, a text file will open, post the contents back of that text file
If you happen to close the window before you copy it, the same information will be on your desktop
In a file called export.txt

3. Can you navigate to the following folder
C:\System32
Don't confuse it with this folder C:\Windows\System32
Open the C:\System32 folder, are there any files in it?

4. Can you go to the following link
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html
Copy and paste the following bold line to the space next to  'Upload a File'

C:\WINDOWS\system32\06DA286E8F.sys

Then use the SEND FILE button
Let it finish scanning
Could you post back the results this scan back here please
Or better yet, just link to the results page
If the file is not found, can you try the next line in the code box

Code: [Select]
C:\WINDOWS\system32\06DA286E8F.sys

Just leave those files be, they're legit, you can see them because hidden files are shown right now

Can you ensure for now that hidden files and folders are shown correctly
 * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

You scanned the wrong file at Virustotal
Can you again go to Virustotal link
This time use the BROWSE button and browse for that file

Here it is again
C:\WINDOWS\system32\06DA286E8F.sys
OR
Code: [Select]
C:\WINDOWS\system32\06DA286E8F.sys
Can you also let me know if at one time you had Zone Alarm installed and have since uninstalled it

1)Files are not hidden
2)There is no 06DA286E8F.sys files in the Windows/System32 folder (did a search for it with no results)
3)I didn't install the program ZoneAlarm
