Windows Media player not recognising blank discs
« on: October 27, 2008, 08:24:14 PM »
Hi my flat mates windows media player doesn't recognise when a blank disc is in the drive anymore.  She inserts a disc, then makes a play list, but when she clicks on burn it opens the drive and asks to insert a disk, but no matter what type it will not recognise when you insert a disc.  We tried to reinstall WMP 11 with no success.

Can you do the following for me please
I in no way think this is malware related, it will just give me more info about your system
and possibly see if anything is interfering

Download Hijackthis Installer from HERE
For an alternate download location, you can try HERE
SAVE it to your desktop
Double click on HJTInstall.exe to run it
Choose Install

Hijackthis v2.0.2 will open
Just close it for now, I just want to ensure the latest version is installed

Then do the following:
Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from >>here<< and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to launch program.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Your firewall may alert you that RSIT is requesting Internet access. Please allow it.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:  log.txt<-- this will be maximized and info.txt<-- this will be minimized.
Post both those logs please

================================================
IF your running Windows Vista:
Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from >>here<< and save it to your desktop.
  • RIGHT click on RSIT.exe and "Run as Administrator"
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Your firewall may alert you that RSIT is requesting Internet access. Please allow it.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:  log.txt<-- this will be maximized and info.txt<-- this will be minimized.
Post both those logs please

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

« Reply #3 on: October 27, 2008, 11:42:10 PM »
Do you have any problems burning with Nero 7 or Sonic RecordNow?

NOTE: I do see a few problems adware related on this computer
We should clean this computer up a bit
I won't be back on till later, but let me know if you have problems recording with either of those recording programs

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

Windows Media player not recognising blank discs
« Reply #6 on: October 29, 2008, 08:01:44 AM »
I'm curious if RecordNow will also work, but at least you have the option to use Nero

Not sure if this will help the WMP 11 problem
But we should run this scanner

download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here
Save the installer to desktop

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.

  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.

  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
        * When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)

  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Also post a fresh hijackthis log

New problem someone clicked on pc recovery on my flat mates computer and now theres no access to the user profiles nor any of the saved files. The hard drive space is still in use which leads me to believe that the files are still there somewhere. All the programs still exist but there are now programs which weren't there before. Alos the internet access no longer exists, its like the computer has been reset.  Please help as i am getting the blame for doing this http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' />

Are you able to boot to safe mode and login with the hidden Admin account and remove any password?
As long as no one has protected any folders, that should be ok?
Have you tried removing passwords>>Control panel>User Accounts

Good work, I suggest that you run a new scan with RSIT.exe and post both logs, It will show where we stand at this point

Can you upload both text files of RSIT

Save a copy of log.txt and info.txt to desktop, or a copy can also be found in the C:\rsit folder

Then, in a reply box back to here, use the

Save a copy of log.txt and info.txt to desktop, or a copy can also be found in the C:\rsit folder

Then, in a reply box back to here, use the

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Access your Add and Remove Programs
Remove the following, ensure your browser windows are closed
If prompted to just remove them from the list, do so

GamesBar 1.0.0.9
My Web Search (Smiley Central)
Need2Find Bar

Next: Your Java is outdated and should be updated to take advantage of security fixes
With your Browser windows closed, remove all the following
Don't reboot the computer until the last one is removed

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Java(tm) 6 Update 2
Java(tm) 6 Update 3
Java(tm) 6 Update 5
Java(tm) 6 Update 7
Java(tm) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Reboot your computer
Back in Windows:

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of  Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 10.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, In the drop down box next to "Platform:"

select Windows,>>Check the "agree" box and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.
Let's now update your version of SpywareBlaster
Go to the following link and download the latest copy of SpywareBlaster 4.1
SpywareBlaster  by JavaCool
Save the installer to desktop, but Do Not install it yet

Open the version of SpywareBlaster you have now
Start>>All Programs menu
When it loads, under Quick Tasks, "Disable All Protections"
When done, exit SpywareBlaster

Access your Add and Remove Programs and remove
SpywareBlaster v3.5.1
After removal, reboot your computer

Back in Windows:
Install the latest version of SpywareBlaster from the installer you downloaded
After installation, Check for updates
After updating, select "Protection Status" on the Left
Then select "Enable all Protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"
or again, click on Protection Startus>>enable all protection

Post back one last fresh Hijackthis log afterwards, let me know of any problems and how things are running

I'll look at your other topic shortly, after you post back the fresh log and have done the above
