Brand New Computer Starts REALLLLLY Slow!
« on: November 03, 2008, 04:33:56 AM »
Hello, just built my very first computer ever... I am a rookie on building, but I had help... anyway, for the first couple weeks it started with no probs... then suddenly after the BIOS screen, then the little bar that has the (I dunno what to call it) slider bar that shows the bars moving sideways just before you put in your password... I get a black screen for as long as 5 minutes then I get the the circular windows logo then I am able to put in my password.... any ideas what could be causing this?

This is my HiJack file dunno if it will help but I figure its a good place to start. http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />

Any new hardware or software installed recently?

What do you use for AntiVirus software?
Can you also do the following
Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from >>here<< and save it to your desktop.
 • RIGHT click on RSIT.exe and select "Run as Administrator"
 • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
 • Your firewall may alert you that RSIT is requesting Internet access. Please allow it.
 • Once it has finished, two logs will open:  log.txt<-- this will be maximized and info.txt<-- this will be minimized.
Can you post Both those logs please
It should give more detail of your system

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

Thanks for your help!  I was hoping you would see this and respond! http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

anyway, here is what I got according to your request... First off I am running Webroot Spysweeper with Anti-Virus... also I have recently installed a Sound Blaster Creative SB Audio sound card but I cant remember if this started before or after the installation... also I have added a couple games... World of Warcraft, FarCry 2 and Crysis (its a gaming computer)  and also I have added a few LED lights into the case for show... other than that, I havent done anything else that I can think of to the computer...

Here are copies of my files as you requested:  Thanks again in advance for any help you supply

Brand New Computer Starts REALLLLLY Slow!
« Reply #3 on: November 05, 2008, 01:31:10 AM »
Nothing popping out at me

You may want to try a clean boot of the machine as try reboot a couple times
See if it's a software conflict

Here's instructions
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796

If it helps, by trial and error, try and track down the problematic entry
If not, may have to try something else
How long as this been happening?

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

I am just really breaking the surface here, I hope I can can continue to learn so that I can do this stuff without the headache of the constant unknown factor lol... computers can be so complicated... just when you think you got something figured out, something else vexes you! http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':o\' />

Ok thanks alot... I will try it out tomorrow and let you know how it goes... btw, its been doing this for about 2 weeks now to answer your question... thanks! http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

Well unfortuneatly, the clean boot did nothing to resolve the problem http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' />

This has been happening for about 3 weeks now but the computer is only about 5 weeks old if that...  I have a sneaky suspicion that the Hard drive may be defective, but I dunno for sure...   the funny thing is, the first time I start the computer after its sat for a long time, it takes about 5 mintues to go from the scrolling bar, then a black screen, then to my password prompt... but after I have started it and its warm, it only gives me about 45 seconds of black screen, which is still more than you would expect on a computer that is brand new with very very few programs on it.

well thanks for your help, if there is anything else you can think of anything would be apprieciated... thanks very very much for your help! http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

Well, honestly, since the computer is that new
I would backup anything, or what you consider
important and reinstall

Then start the troubleshooting procedure
After you reinstall, remember any update or software you install that may be
corruptive or interruptive

Thanks guestolo, if I decide to reinstall windows, then still have the problem, then go to get a new hard drive, will I have to buy a new copy of windows since its a new hard drive... and I have web-root spy sweeper... will I have to buy another copy yet again to re-install that if I replace the hard drive or even wipe it and re-install it on the hard drive?  Mabye dumb questions, sorry for that, but when I wiped my hard drive a long time ago I had to buy a new copy of web root spy sweeper even though I had nearly a year left on my subcription... I called them but after waiting for nearly 30 mins on the help line for Webroot, I gave up and bought another one... how would I go about keeping the one I have if I wipe the hard drive without having to buy another one?  And if you say back it up, how do I do this so that it will still work on my hard drive?  Thanks yet again!

Thanks for all your help, you are a GOD send to so many people I am sure! lol http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

You won't need to buy a new copy, I thought you may have to Reactivate
But according to Microsoft, there won't be no need for reactivation

Here's a great link about  Vista Activation
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-v...vation-faq.aspx

Hardware changes that do not invoke the Windows Vista re-activation process may vary based on how you acquired Windows Vista. For example:

If you acquired Windows Vista via retail purchase (boxed product) or pre-installed on a computer from a local computer vendor, Windows Vista will not require re-activation if you, for example:

*Replace the hard disk drive only.

*Replace the video card and add system memory at the same time.

If you acquired Windows Vista pre-installed on a computer from a major manufacturer (sometimes referred to as an Original Equipment Manufacturer or OEM), Windows Vista will require re-activation if you replace the motherboard with a motherboard not provided by the OEM.

That would of really irked me, but you have a lot of patience
I would of given up on Webroot after that, but that's me http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

I assume you can just redownload
