Linux with Windows ????
« on: November 18, 2008, 04:36:05 AM »
Here's a problem that's been bugging me for ages. I haven't really found the time to fix it up until recently. At the moment I have Windows XP Professional SP2 installed on a Compaq Presiaro SR5120AN. The default OS on this was Windows Vista Home Basic. However I removed this and downgraded to Windows XP. Since than I have not been able to hear any sound as Windows XP does not recognise my Audio card. I have tried getting drivers for it but nothing seems to work.

I have looked around for pirated copies of Vista Home Basic as I have a legit License Key on my computer but I did not recieve the disk with my purchase. I have come up with two options which I will most probably refer to.

1) Install Unix (Ubuntu) and attempt to find a way of running windows programs off it. This is my main problem I have heard it possible and have heard about X Window or X11 but I have looked into and have found it all a bit confusing.

2) I simply take it to the shop and have them re-install Vista ($90!). Obviously I would be much more pleased if I could fix it without having to pay $90.

Thanks,
Josh

I take it you didn't create the Recovery disks when you first got your computer?
Do you still have the Recovery partition on your computer?
Normally, you tap F11 when you first startup to enter it
You should also be able to order a set of Vista Recovery Disks from HP

But, if prefer to keep XP
What drivers have you tried so far?
Look in your Device manager for any yellow exclamation marks
Is audio the only one not working?

Edit>
Take a look at the following link
http://h30434.www3.hp.com/psg/board/messag...amp;thread.id=3
See CherylG's reply at the bottom of the link
Your hardware matches the other users
You shouldn't need the WLAN driver however
Select appropriate download location for your region
Eg.. UK drivers should be International
Default is set to US English
I just realized that you are outside of US/Canada
Are you in Australia?
If so, I may be able to help link you to more appropriate drivers?

If you are in AU
Try this driver first for Chipset>>GeForce 6150SE nForce 430
http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/nforce_winxp_15.24_uk.html
Reboot after installation

For graphics>>Integrated graphics using nVidia GeForce 6150SE
http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/winxp_178.24_whql_uk.html

For Audio>>Realtek
ftp://61.56.69.18/pc/audio/WDM_R209.exe

If the download link for Realtek is really slow, cancel it and try this link, see if it makes a difference
ftp://152.104.238.19/pc/audio/WDM_R209.exe

Try the order of downloads I suggested
Reboot in between each one

See if that helps

Hey it worked!

I don't think you will be able to comprehend how grateful I am.

The only way I can sum it up online is to say THANKYOU

But I'm so happy you have helped me majorly and saved me a lot of time.

No problem, glad it helped
I'm still curious, just in case you decide to go back to Vista

Do you see that option when you bootup?

I see it but I hadn't created a restore point thus making it pointless.

I'm not worried about a Restore point
And I should stop worrying anyways, if your happy with XP
You have want you want
But if you navigate to MyComputer, you may see a D: drive
Compaq or HP
If you see that, you still have a Recovery Partition installed
You have the option of reinstalling Vista if need be
Make the backup Recovery disks

Even dual boot if wanted, but that's all up to you
Again, if happy with XP, don't worry about it
